Husky Air Tools

My wife bought me a Husky Air tool kit after I bought the Husky Air compressor. My problem is with the 1/2" Impact gun. The thing can't even take off lug nuts. And the thing leaks oil as you use it. I think it's only rated at 230ft/lbs.

Anybody ever have issues like this with any other impact gun?

Yes, my (basically) free Cman set that came with my compressor Both the gun and ratchet leaked oil (esp the ratchet) and the gun was quite lacking in power (although it did do a few sets of tire rotations without problem before I got my IR).

I don't have a husky Impact, but I've got a air hammer and die grinder I've been pleased with. Maybe yours is defective.

Is it one of the cheapies that look like this?

Those low-end impacts aren't the greatest. Sears used to package some air tools inside one of their compressor boxes, and the impacts were pathetically weak.
One of the deals with impacts is to make sure you have enough volume at the gun. This means a large enough hose not too long with large enough fittings.
When you say it leaks oil, does it come out through the exhaust? If so, that is normal, maybe you put in more than it needed.

Yes it looks like that, only red rubber and a red rubber handle.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but has anyone tried the Husky Pro 650 impact wrench. I saw it at HD the other day. That's some serious power (650 ft/lbs) for the money ($139).

i don't mean to hijack the thread either but i have this husky 3/8 impact. it works but it's no where near the "100ft lbs" they claim. plus it suffers from the same thing every other cheap air tool does, some times it binds up and you have to turn it by hand to get it started. also, i almost laughed my **** off when i read in the manual that its easy one handed reverse. you can see in the picture it is impossible to change direction one handedly. unless you hold it with one hand and use your other one hand to turn the knob. the c-clip on the end of the anvile doesn't even apply pressure to the socket so the sockets fall right off. it's painted aluminum so after one use it looked like i drug it behind a truck for 30 miles and i am very particular about keeping my tools looking nice. it makes me sick when i see people slide their impact on the floor under a car rather than unhook the hose and carry the thing to the other side of the car. it was 50 bucks and has a 2 or 3 year warranty.

$140 gets you an ir231 from sears which has 700 and are the industry standard because they have proven to be cheap and powerful they arent the lightest but almost every tech i know keeps one around as backup

The 231 is the **** . I have 2 and a Blue Point nock off that I paid 40 bux for. I bought a Harbor Frieght 3/8 impact for 15 dollars and can't complain for what I paid for it . When it shits the bed I might buy a better one but fir now it works .

I have an IR 231C that I purchased a few years ago and it sure as heck does not put out 700 ft/lbs of torque. It's a really good gun, but I believe it is rated at 500 or so. I am not really looking to buy the Husky, just curious if anyone had actually used one. My next gun will be a 2135TiMax.

I have one of 1/2in PRO ones, It's pretty much worthless. Or at least has been my experience with it.

I had the prepackaged Craftsman set that came with the compressor when I bought it. It lasted me several years until one day I killed it trying to remove corroded lug nuts/studs on my moms VW trying to do a tire rotation and flat repair for her. I couldn't get any of them loose and all of a sudden the seals blew out on it. Since I needed something right away I ended up buying a Husky from HD only because I could get right then and there and it claimed 700 ft lbs of torque in reverse. It worked and has been working for the past couple years now no problems.

I bought a 3/8 drive at a flea market and it doesn't have much power but it doesn't leak.

Just find a IR 231 or 212 and be done with it!

Some of the Husky rotary tools are good, you got to be selective. For the difference with impacts the cost isn't a substantial leap to a brand name.

You would be much better off with almost any CP or IR or even some models of FP than any stuff from Husky. Even Craftsman has some good relabeled IR and CP's but most are FP's and some like husky stuff is not worth buying.

I have a IR 231 that's cheap and strong enough for almost everything I do.

I also have a 3/4 drive for bigger stuff, and a cheapy that's great for lugs nuts only. Don't need a torque wrench for the cheapy, when it stops the lugs are just tight enough.

The IR 231 sells for about 110 to 120 from amazon.com

Its a scam. Honestly. A impact gin that puts out 300lbs. is pretty useless. They make them but you can generate more torque with a 15" breaker bar. It is ok in areas where you can not fit a long handle or for nuts on shafts that turn and you need a quick impact. That accounts for about 1% of impact use. About the same as having a electric screwdriver that provides much less torque than you can put on by manual twisting.

Low power impact guns have nu place other than on the self of the cheep tool store. They are useless toys. I have owned one so I know.

Yes I agree, 230 ft-lbs is useless unless its for smaller stuff. I borrowed my friends CP with 700 ft-lbs.....WAY BETTER!

Since I got the Husky stuff from my wife, I cant complain too much.

I will be picking up something a little more powerfull in the future.

Could you expand on this? Do you have the Husky Pro? What model? What don't you like about it?
