Husky impact wrench

Ok, I've read a bit about this problem, but I'm torn on the best way to proceed.

I bought the 4 piece kit from Home Depot, and am not getting enough torque from the 1/2 impact to break lug nuts torqued to 85 loose. I've read of others with the same problem, and understand it's more about CFM than psi. The kit came with 1/4 npt quick connectors, and I bought a 30 foot rubber 3/8 hose for it. Shouldn't that be enough? Or should I look into larger quick connects? Or should I modify the wrench itself, or buy a better one? The book for it rates it at over 300 lbs.

What's the cfm rating on your compressor @90psi? It should be at least as high as the rating on your impact wrench.

I agree right now, but shouldn't I be able to get more than 100lbs out of it?

I've got one and it's the worst impact I've ever had...I really don't know why it's still in my box....I'll give it to my son when he gets older...(Right now he's only-3 months old..He's due in Feb...)

Your impact is what's the problem, not your air. Get another one.... seriously

You ever hear the term 'specsmanship'? That's what Husky is doing with their rated 300 ft-lbs

Well, I'll try my luck at getting Home Depot to take it back and get another.

Thanks for the input. I'm relieved to know I don't need to upgrade air lines

Try oiling it. It may be defective though. Can you test it on a larger compressor?

I recently upgraded from a $30 HF impact to an Ingersoll Rand 231C. It buzzes off the lugnuts on my van (95ft-lb) no problem. The HF impact wouldn't touch them. My compressor setup isn't optimal either. 15gallon, 3.5scfm @ 90psi, and a 50' 3/8" hose reel. It really impressed on me the quality of the impact wrench mattered more than the cfm at least for short term use like taking off a tire. If you look at the average CFM required in the IR 231C manual I believe it's only 4.2cfm.

I also have had good success with the Ingersoll Rand 231C. Got it at a Pawn Shop for $40 and works like a charm.

Went to a tire store and had them test it, and they took off lugs no problem. Said it felt like it had good enough power.

I'm experimenting with my lines now, but if another guy is running a 50 foot hose reel with a compressor half the size of mine, I should be getting better results

It wouldnt hurt to double check your air hose and make sure it doesnt have something blocking the flow. Pieces of plumbers tape or other debris can cut the air flow. A different quick connect fitting could be another thing to try. A few years agoe I bought a bad one with a new hose, it wasnt until I returned the first hose thst I found the problem was with the connect.

Good luck

Do you have a regulator on your output? Most regulators are relatively low flow, especially one on a little compressor. Combine the part where it's already dialing back the pressure and the low flow, and it'll really kill the hell out of your under-load pressure. Great for nail guns and such where you want a constant pressure, no bueno for impacts and such. We run unregulated air with 100-150psi to all the tools in the shop, they run great (especially with high flow fittings) and haven't damaged one yet.

 I sent the op a pm and I had him test it at a tire store ( or any store that had a larger air system).

As I said before Husky is starting to make better tools and for all the guys saying they ****...well maybe you should revisit husky again.

They should have made a better one back when I bought one....Why would I go back to husky when you can buy a HF earthquake, which is a decent gun? :headscrat

Yes I agree with you 100% sad but they are trying their best. From everything I have been hearing the HF Earthquake is a very nice air tool.

Ok. Restriction was in the harbor freight hose reel. After eliminating the reel I was able to get lug nuts off, and almost broke one putting it on. Definitely the hose reel.

Upon closer inspection, there was less than. 1/4 inch hole for airflow in the rotating couple that let it spin.

Now that being said, it didn't break them loose right away. It still took a few impacts. But, the sears compressor I had for a few days with the sears wrench, actually took off my axle nut, torqued to 174. It wouldn't however take off my lower ball joint bolts torqued to 166 with red loctite.

So, I'm going to ditch the harbor freight reel and get some better connectors and use it for a bit. I don't know if this means a better wrench would have performed better, I doubt it. The reel setup was damn restrictive.

When returned the reel at HF I saw the earthquake, $100! With that much power though i would be breaking stuff.

Yep, but notice how people instantly start ******* on the low cost brand, instead of looking for sensible, economical solutions?

brownfaux, glad to hear you got it working.

Here's my 50' cord-reel and little compressor :)

I really love the ZillaReel. Flexible in cold weather and good air flow through it.

The reel itself is pretty solid, the cheap hoses have a lot to be desired.. Go to HF and pick up a few goodyear hoses...Then go get some quality connectors....:3gears:

Yeah, I inspected my connectors closer and bought the better ones. I also just got a 25 foot hose. I'll just coil it for now. Maybe add a reel again later and the use the direct hose for he impact, and the reel for my blow gun, ratchets and grinder.
