Husky sockets - strange detents

I recently stopped by Home Depot to pick up a specific socket I wanted another of. Picket up a Husky 10mm 1/4" drive. I got it home, put it on a ratchet, and found that it easily popped right off. WTF? I looked at the detents inside the socket and they looked really strange. Almost as if the intent was a ramp to help it go on the drive and over the ball easily. But there was no feature to retain.

I picked a Craftsman at Ace and it was spot on, stays on the ratchet, detent was the one we see on 99% of sockets.

I was returning the Husky and looked at some of the others on the wall. Same thing as the one I initially got so it wasn't a manufacturing defect.

Has anyone else seen this or experienced issues with these not staying on the drive?

They say - "Chamfered lead-ins help to provide fast and easy placement onto drive tools and fasteners" Not anyting specific about a lead-in for the detent. Doesn't explain why yours don't stay on. Is there a detent on the inside for the ball to rest in?

Huh that's weird. You still have the hang tag? Any idea where it was made?

Bunch o husky sockets here including a full blow mold set. Most several years old so not recent production but none look like that. And they all fit any ratchet & extension... old Cman RP clubs, duralast, hazard freight etc no problem.

last year i started a new job, and needed to build up a good set of tools (millwright, all previous employer's supplied tools). but bought a set of Mastercraft Maximum sockets. (have been great tools for us canadians). but they are all like that, drives me insane when using a hog-ring impacts, they fall of constantly. i use a small 1" length ball detent extension to help.

I have some TEQ which are Gearwrench/Apex. They are 1/4in drive sockets and those detents are annoying as heck. Give a false insertion 50% of the time where the ratchet feels like it is there but wont push in. I get annoyed once again when I go to put them back on the rack.

I see it as a flaw and of course the flaw gets marketed as something it isn't, to justify the mistake.

It looks like a defect to me, just because you got another the same doesn't mean its not a defect, they could have an entire lot/run of them from a specific shift or run that is bad and both sockets you got are likely from the same run/lot.

I picked up a Husky 1/4” drive hex bit socket set yesterday. The packaging was molded around the tools so I couldn’t open it at the store (I guess I could have, and should have).

Once opened at home I noticed this “feature” is on all of them. No manufacturing defect when it’s across multiple sizes and types of different sockets. Just a crappy design.

Looks like they no longer machine the second detent. Must be a new cost saving measure.

There is nothing for the ball to grab once past the chamfer. If there were I think this concept would be nice.

That's an APEX thing...
Originally, there was a detent divot below the chamfer for the retainer ball. Some moronic thing Craftsman started when APEX was the Sears supplier of Craftsman. Some don't get the detent divot....

Just curious, have you examined the Husky ratchet to see if it is still just a plain square and if this socket will hang on it?

Who remembers or maybe even bought..? A few years back the big box of husky sockets Christmas deal?

Think it was 200 odd sockets for $100 ? Something like that?

Seemed like most liked em then & didn't have many complaints? Most of my husky junk is at least that old... maybe a wee bit older.
