Husky tool box @ HD

I know this is pretty small for some of you guys, but it replaces my old two drawer on my tool bench. Ball bearing slides, I like it for $29.

Wait...you bought this new for 30 bucks? You might be just as cheap as me because at that price I might buy one of those chinatown specials to store my screwdrivers.

Oh yeah, you should grab a cheap wire brush (or set) and some oil (marine oil) to clean and oil those wrenches boss; rust ain't a feature!

Hmm. I really want to grab one at that price, but I'm well-stocked on tiny tool boxes...I need at least a two bay cabinet and already have a larger Craftsman version of this thing..

I gave the drawers a shot of lube to start with, they seem really good.
I am very happy with the box, this one will stay on my work bench. But I am considering another to replace my "tool bag" as my grab and go.

I do a lot of "family service calls" throughout the year...

They only had a couple left so I just got one yesterday.
It is an upgrade for me.

I've been looking at these online, haven't had a chance to get to HD yet to check them out in person. Seems like a good way for me to upgrade from my tool bags that are falling apart and/or overflowing. I want a roller chest but don't know if I can fit one into my garage.

What keeps the drawers closed if the top isn't open? Some sort of detent mechanism?

I saw a floor model at HD yesterday and wasn't impressed... When I opened one of the drawers, the slide came off of one side. Hopefully this was just from customers abusing it. Can those who bought one comment on the build quality? Particularly slides and hinges.

It's a $30 floor model. What did you expect?

It has cheap hinges and slides, thin metal and sloppy closing mechanisms. The tolerances are loose and the quality control is minimal.

It holds your tools. It's 30 bucks.

You now know everything there is to know about this box. I never get why people are surprised that very cheap things are lower quality than more expensive things. The ratio of price to functionality is extreme, but the fit and finish is crappy, of course.

If it can't stand up to a few months of customers kicking the tires, it will never stand up to 20yrs in a home workshop and wouldn't last a week in a professional shop.

It's home depot. Some kids could have messed with it, or it could have been damaged during shipment. I can go break the slide on a Snap On drawer, doesn't really speak much to the quality of the box. Only way to know is to use it for 20 years. For $30 bucks I don't see why you guys are expecting it to last 20 years. It's $30 bucks. You can spend more than that on a tape measurer.

It holds the tools, and from what I've seen of them both it's better than the craftsman ones for the same price point. I had this box, and the craftsman equivalent on my list of portable tool boxes, but went with neither of them. I had a gift card for HD and shop your way points for sears so it would have been free for either box. I ended up with a craftsman 23" plastic hand box (http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-...p-00959423000P?prdNo=9&blockNo=9&blockType=G9). It was cheap, light, and felt decent, and is really only gonna be kept in my car holding tools for just in case situations, or if I need to go somewhere and help someone.

The drawers would have been quite nice, but they just didn't feel like the best, and I figured they would stop functioning under the conditions. Plastic is nice and light, and it flexes and bends better than metal

Whoa there! I'm not expecting the world from a $30 box, but I would like to be able to open the drawer without it falling apart. Would've been real fun if that drawer was loaded up with tools and they were all dumping on my toes! Please forgive me though for asking for feedback from those who have had more time with this box, so very sorry to inconvenience you.

I had one of these holding my craftsman 309pc socket set plus some misc tools bouncing around in my jeep for a few months. I had no problems with the drawers. Someone finally returned a smaller cman set I had loaned him and I ended up keeping that set in my Jeep instead. The toolbox was too heavy when loaded full with sockets and tools, so I replaced it with a chest toolbox setup. I no longer had any need for the husky 3 drawer toolbox, so I ended up turning it into a boombox. In all the time I had it loaded with sockets, I never had any problems with the drawers falling out. I did notice the lid flexing a little, but I had all the drawers full to the brim with sockets and misc tools. The display model may have been messed with and not put back correctly or the lever holding the ball bearing slides in may have been stuck open. at $29 this box is a killer deal. Im thinking about buying a few more.

Update:

I have been so impressed with the three drawer I started this thread with that I bought the five drawer last week. It has 50 lb slides and seems to be a pretty study unit.

I am not sure why someone wondered off into the roll around floor model talk.
Or why some one would talk about a professional shop and a three drawer tool box of this size. But it is the internet.

But these units seem pretty nice, I gave $98 for this five drawer.
I looked in Kmart at their Craftsman box closest to this one and the drawer slides where rated at 25 lbs a drawer, that is not enough for me.

Now I just got to fill it, won't take long.

i have a 40 inch 10 drawer husky box at home and it works great no problems

i did get it for 200 so i wont complain either

I have some Husky boxes too, the 4 over 2+2 cabinet doors on rollers with an added 2 drawer intermediate box. My top box well lid didn't have a handle. If yours doesn't also, I suggest you go back to HD and pick up a shiny wire handle, two small shiny washers, and two fender washers. Figure out where you want to mount the handle and drill the holes. Epoxy the fender washers to the inside and use the smaller washers on the outside. Didn't make a world of difference but it did make a difference, and it looks like it should have been there.

UPDATE: Both of the boxes pictured are still in use and doing great.

I never close the lid on either one, top is full of stuff.

I am just a regular DYI guy, so they are not put under daily use, but are used pretty often. I am still very happy with both, and am still keeping my eye out for the little three drawer to be in stock...
