Sorry if this has been discussed, I did do some searches, but you guys use 'Husky' in virtually every thread it seems, haha.

I really want a Snap-On tool box to replace my Kennedy. I love the Kennedy, but I bought it when I thought I was going to be doing more machining, the drawers are too shallow for my sockets and all other mechanic type tools.

I'm having a hard time justifying the $4k+ for the one I want. If I was a mechanic by profession, it would be a no brainer, but this is just a hobby. I was talking to a friend who said the Huskys are built right alongside Snap-on and Craftsman boxes. Is this true (I'm apprehensive).

Home Depot has a nice selection of Huskys, however they don't seem to make a copy similar to, say a KRA2422, which is the type I'm thinking about.

Anyone have insight? I appreciate any advice or ridicule.

Thanks!

Huskey and SO have nothing in common other then being tool boxes. At one time husky boxes were the same as entry level Mac boxes, but that was 10+ years ago. I don't think huskey has any connection to craftsman either. As far as I know craftsman is still made by Waterloo in Mexico or US. Husky as far as I know, is Asian.

Have you looked on Craigslist? I bought two different Mac boxes in excellent condition for dirt cheap. The small setup with Cman top was $250 with a Matco rattle can holder and the big was $500 with pry bar box and side shelf. The small Husky side box I also bought on cl for $75. I see tons of large Snap On and Mac maximizers on there all the time for rather cheap. I just wish I had the room.

I'm no Harbor Freight fan, not at all, but I'd go US General over Husky all day. There's a thread somewhere where someone went and did an in depth review of the big box store toolboxes. The Husky fell below modern Craftsman if that says anything.

I have a Husky top box over a CM chest. It's the full wide 4 drawer model. The drawers glide well but are a bit wobbly side to side. No detents or latches to keep them closed. No problems in 3 years.

I don't think I would listen to advice from that friend anymore. Go to the store and check out the Husky's you will see they are thinner metal boxes. I have two of them for general home use. I got them cheap.

He could be getting old info, not trying to steer me wrong.

The problem is that I don't have ready access to any snap on boxes to make a side by side comparison.

I see the stuff on CL, but it seems any time there is something decent I find it on a sunday afternoon, and I rarely have $1500+ in cash laying around on a sunday, haha.

I'll keep looking, thanks for info to the contrary of what I've heard on the Husky stuff.

I almost bought this husky box.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-52...-Top-22-in-Extra-Deep-HOTC5211B1QBD/204765860

I decided to go with the harbor freight box instead.

http://www.harborfreight.com/tool-s...ossy-red-industrial-roller-cabinet-68784.html

I really liked the size of the husky. it is a special order so I could not actually put hands on it. and the harbor freight has great reviews on this sight. plus it is expandable that was a big upside for me. I have had the harbor freight box for a few weeks now and I can say it is amazing for the money.

I have a 27" Husky that I got on black Friday. Nice box for the money (think it was around $100 for top/mid/bottom), and don't really have too many issues with it. The bottom drawers can be a little sticky if fully loaded (the really deep ones). Now I also have an older Waterloo ('84) and CM top ('74) and they are all fine for what I need. However I am also a home fix it guy, not a professional mechanic.

if you can deal with the red, the harbor freight box will serve you well for the money.

ive owned snap on and the harbor freight and the husky. all of them are miles apart from each other in style and quality.

used for the snap on is the best bet. check every minute. they pop up cheap you just have to get them quick.

I saw some pretty neat Matco boxes on CL. How much worse than Snap-on?

Matco boxes are on par with SO. Just like there are different grades of SO, there are different grades of Matco. Just saying so you don't think a 4s is equal to epiq. A 6s is on level with a KRL.

Choosing a box should focused on meeting your needs. If the Husky box meets your needs then that's the one for you. I'm sure it will perform great in a home garage with typical use. If you are working out it daily as a profession I sure it begin to disappoint quickly since it was never intended for that purpose.

I have three stacks of 26 inch wide Craftsman's (54 drawers total) which serve me well but some of those drawers haven't been opened in months. The tools are there when I need them but I'm not in there every day. Never paid full price for any of them as I bought them all either on super clearance or used over the years. They meet my needs and will last me forever.

I'm no Harbor Freight fan, not at all, but I'd go US General over Husky all day. There's a thread somewhere where someone went and did an in depth review of the big box store toolboxes. The Husky fell below modern Craftsman if that says anything.

the problem there is that the original thread you are talking about, and a lot of the HF vs [kobalt|craftsman|husky|whatever] reviews/comparisons are from 2011, which was 5 years ago.

the HF44 people are in love with now seems to have just been introduced (which is why there are some discussions of HF42's and different paint finishes) in 2011.

while those are all great reviews, and represent a lot of hard work, i am not sure that any of those boxes are the same ones being sold now. while the HF44 seems to still be there largely untouched, i will note that there are two stock numbers listed on the web site, which to me implies that they have two different people building them (although it is possible that it is just two locations of the same manufacturer). i am pretty sure that the other vendors are not selling the same boxes now that they were 3 years ago, let alone 6.

i have actually done a bit of shopping in the last few months. while there is tremendous variability even inside lines (craftsman seems to have standard, heavy duty, premium, edge premium, and industrial, as example), if you pay attention, i think that you will find that there are some pretty nice craftsman and husky boxes out there. maybe not as nice as the HF44, but maybe nicer than the HF26. they are about the same price point for the husky, although the craftsman remain excessively priced at list, thank god they are constantly on sale, eh? at least craftsman differentiates, husky doesn't seem to differentiate them. as an example, the 27" rolling chests go from 5 drawer at 159$ to a 6 drawer at 179$, but them jumps to 249 for the 7 drawer. obviously there are some differences besides just the addition of another drawer, but you need to dig to find out.

at this point, as my head spins, i think that the right answer is to try and decide three things:

1) your budget.

how much can you spend now? if you are going to need to spread out your purchases, do you think the remainder of what you need will still be there?

2) your space.

are you adding, or are you thinking of replacing existing storage too? will selling the old stuff substantially increase your budget? pay attention, replacing two 26/27" stacks with a 40/44" stack might not get you any additional space, and you might end up with less.

3) what you are trying to store?

this is what really defines what you are gong to get. if what you have to store just won't fit in the drawers of that HF44, well, it really doesn't matter how well it is made, or even how much it costs. if it won't work, you need to look somewhere else.

personally, the HF44 (which is really a 40, by the way, they seem to include the handle in the dimension) would be a lot more attractive me me if it just had full width drawers. i guess i can see cutting up the top drawer on the top chest, but even there, i would prefer one drawer. if you are feeling generous, include two drawer separators. and please, dont set the lock on the top cabinet to lock just the top drawer if i turn the key far enough. offer me a "wallet locker" for inside the top for me to keep my wallet in while i am working. charge me extra for it, not a problem.

i understand that all of the vendors have these problems.

i guess, in the end, relying on 5 year old information doesn't seem like a completely rational thing to do, just like writing off the HF chests because of the perceived cheapness of other things they sell is.

I use to like Husky boxes. Then a coworker got one and after 3 months the top bearing gave out and he had to take to home depot just to warranty it for a whole new box! I say they are probably good for home use but for day to day professional environment they fall apart. I love scanning craigslist for use big name box thats where I buy 99.9% of my boxes.

I'd definitely make sure you can put your hands on any husky box you want to buy. I got the 40" a few years ago. Half the drawers in the bottom box didn't lock after 3 months. I had so much trouble with the warranty I gave up. Sold the bottom & use the top for bolts & other consumables. I bought it because a guy at work had the 52" top & bottom & it was really nice. The 52" that's always on sale for about $300 is total ****. I've read in other threads that they're all made by different people so you have to look at the exact one you want. The 56" made by international is nice. I have a hf cart that's been used daily for a couple years & would have no reservations about buying one of their bigger boxes. Those are all boxes I have seen people use enough to be able to properly judge. I can't speak for any of the other models.

I have a Husky rollaway with the clear Plexiglas drawer fronts with the lights inside. It's ok as I don't move it. I bought it because it was the right size for my tiny garage and it was the only one at HD that was made in USA.

The Harbor Freight boxes offer the most for the money. Period.. They are much better made than husky and craftsman if you compare them. The 44" HF box is modular, and expandable to basically any size. It offers the best price and the most customizable set up that offers you professional options at a consumer level cost. Many people on here love them, myself included. I was drawn into the Husky boxes when I decided I needed something bigger. The lockers alone for the HF are enough to sway a lot of people's opinions.

You can start off with just the lower chest, and expand as needed if you decide you need to. The lower 44" is on sale for $369. The top is $289. The 56" is longer and deeper..

A HF 44" box - top & bottom chest with 2 side lockers is about $1050..
A HF 56" box - top & bottom chest with 2 side lockers is about $1630..
This is the 56" set up that someone applied "snap on" decals to, and was selling on Craigslist for like $3000..
