Has anyone replaced these wheels with something stronger? The wheels the box comes with look nice but they are a cheap plastic material. Not sure how long they will hold up. I do not feel like flipping the cabinet upside down just yet to see what size they are which is why I am asking if anyone has swapped them out and with what.
Thanks!!

I swapped out some old ones a couple years back. My driver was to get all four corners swiveling. I picked up 4 from the Big River in a nice bright color, at double the weight capacity I guessed the box was good for. The ones I got were easily installed (the mounting plates had some adjustment to them I think) as far as affixing the new casters. The pain was in having to empty the box (and the chest top) to do the swap. Amazon has tons of them in various sizes, most often sold in sets of 4. I'm just guessing but if that Husky is the 46" standard model it wears 5 inch rollers.

If they go by the wheel size I can measure that and shop around. I think you are right about the 5". Wasn't sure if there is a standard on the bolt hole pattern on these things. I would prefer all swivels myself.

I don't know if all boxes follow a common bolt pattern - this is the one I used on a 1970's Craftsman roller - the slotted bolt holes give it a little wiggle in fitting I think .. (picture found floating in the Big River - this is a heavier version (3000 pounds) than I used, but the same mounting plate)

Following. I have the same wheels on my Husky tool chest and they're awful looking. I'd like to replace them with all black.

I have the same Husky bench but its a few years older before the plastic rims look. Mine look like normal casters.
Craftsman uses those too,
I'm looking for replacement Kennedy casters. One of my swivel casters is bent and jams. But I didnt want to spend a ton, Kennedy sell them for like $150.

Good morning OzarkMan,

Have you had a chance to install these on your Husky cabinet yet, and how do you like them?

Thanks!

I did. I will get pictures in a day or two. Trying to wrap up things before the epoxy guys show up. Was going to update this thread with the pros and cons.

Update on the wheels from Amazon. The ones I linked above seem to have great reviews but I am not so sure they can really handle 2200lbs. I say that since upon examining them closely, they seem to have casting "cracks" in the plastic/nylon hub. It could be just the way they were molded or they could be hairline cracks from the processing of them. Either way, I put them on as the next wheel upgrade was like $95. I didn't want to spend that much. The cons are they need to have spacers to bring the caster away from the mounting plate of the tool box otherwise the locking lever hits the bottom edges of the tool box when trying to lock the caster. I put two 3/8" thick washers but in reality you would need to stack like 4 or 5. I seldom lock the wheels anyway. The Pros are these casters do roll nicely and are quiet. The tool box moving around doesn't sound like a 1974 Marx Big Wheel trike sliding around the pavement.
So getting back to the husky box. I originally wanted to get the Kobalt version of the Husky primarily since Kobalt offered the smaller cabinet in gray. Lowes had a backorder of them so I went with the Husky one thinking the Lowes smaller tool box would probably match in color. They do not. The irony is the Kobalt version of the Husky can now be ordered again as it seems to be in stock at some warehouse.

Finally, I ordered the Snapon emblems to elevate the tool boxes! I ordered two on different dates and received the one so far. I think it looks great and at least both big box store tool boxes will have one common name to go with the common styled casters.

OzarkMan, I loved your idea so much I did the same. The chrome wheels and husky badge on my 46” were cheap looking. I bought the same wheels as you, and added some Summit Racing decals to make it look more like a box you’d buy from Summit Racing. Pretty happy with how it turned out!
