Stopped at Home Depot today and ran across two matte black 52 inch rolling cabinets with top chests. Both are very similar, same price, on sale for $898. About the only difference is one has a pull out drawer that has a flip up wood worktop. That one is not listed online as even being available anywhere. Called the store and I guess it’s just something special they got in.
Anybody have either of these chests? They look like a good competitor to the hf ones. The non wood top one is model h52ch6tr9hd. That is listed on website. Store worker couldn’t find a model number for wood top one. Thanks for any opinions.

I can’t speak for the particular models you’re looking at, but I have a 56 inch husky chest that I got 2-3 years ago. Probably equivalent to what you’re looking at. It’s nice for my use, which is occasional homeowner use. It’s not as nice as the HF boxes, but cost significantly less. I think mine was about $600

I'm in the market for tool boxes. I'm also surprised that the HF are better quality than the Husky. In what ways are you HF better? Which brand of

Also, I have a small space and thought about getting this Husky:

Any thoughts about its pros and cons?

I don’t have the HF, I have the husky. I’ve looked at the HF in the store and it just feels better built. It should for the significant cost difference. Are you looking at getting the bottom and top chest? The only real con I see to that 26 inch is that it will get filled up quick. I thought my 56 inch would be plenty big but it’s full and I still need more room

I had a husky 56". I got a deal on it for fathers day. The quality was nice However the box itself was beat to ****. The cardboard box was in good condition but the tool chest had 5 -6 dents and all 4 casters were bent. I was pretty pissed but I was able to get some store credit for all the cosmetic damages. I was able to beat the casters and the tool box was somewhat level. Once it was full of tools it wasn't very stable. I had to anchor it to the wall. It damn near fell over on me, luckily I was able to push it back up against the wall.

The 56" boxes and the 52" are completely different boxes from different manufacturers, comparing the two makes no sense. The 52" the OP is looking at is significantly better build quality than the 56". I have a few friends who have the 52"( textured/ matte paint finish) and the box is outstanding. I feel like its a better box than the HF, but also the two harbor freight 44" boxes would get you just as much storage but with no top box for cheaper.

I just snagged a couple of them for my kitchen in the basement. I like them so far but have not used them enough to form an opinion. $498 each.

Handful of years ago I bought a Husky box that looks like that one but is WAAAAAY nicer. Go to a store and put your hands on that thing. Its consumer junk.

Starting to look for another cab myself and would love a 40+ or 56 but can't do it because stairs. So I'm looking for another 26" and that Husky isn't a contender. If it was built as well as my old one I'd have bought it.

Some of the Husky boxes are decent. The matte black Husky sitting next to it was much more solid.

I'd probably buy Craftsman before a HF box and probably will when the time comes. None of the boxes on display at my HF are in great shape... granted they probably have a bunch of people beating on 'em but it doesn't inspire confidence when the drawers don't open all the way and/or are locked and they can't find keys. Plus Cman is USA and less $$

Bottom line if you pay $100 for a cab don't be shocked when its a piece of ****. Get off your ***, out to a store and put hands on 'em yourself.

As a former Lowes tool dept. mang. I can tell you Kobalt had a better and best boxes, during Black Fri., Christmas and Fathers day they would come out with a cheap box for their sales. Home Depot and HF are the same way, You get what you pay for. Now depending what you are going to use it for it could be a great deal. You don't want to race a funny car with a Honda. Boxes have decreased in quality over the years, I have a Mac box that was made in 1963 and if you hit it with your car your car would come out with more damage. Creftsman use to have different levels of boxes when they were with sears, I don't know when they stopped doing the Pro boxes but they were a good box. HD gauge drawers and HD ball bearing slides. Better boxes had ballbearing slide just not HD and the good boxes didnt have BB slides. Same thing applies today only most boxes have some sort of BB slides.

Thanks. Your comments suggest that I look on the used market (craigslist in my area) for a quality tool chest. Sellers don't disclose the age, but is there a cutoff date in your experience, that I should pass on buying a used tool chest?

What do you mean by: "HD gauge drawers and HD ball bearing slides. Better boxes had ballbearing slide just not HD and the good boxes didnt have BB slides."

Just for some (more) input, I've got the 52" Husky box, not the "Industrial" one but the cheaper one. It definitely doesn't feel as sturdy as the US General boxes, but I bought it when I was relatively strapped for cash and needed something. Definitely worth the money IMO, I wanna say it was $400? But if I were buying now, with a little bit of a better financial situation, I'd buy the US General Series 2 box all day. They feel sturdier, they're deeper, and they're overall a solid buy for the money. They may not be Snap-On quality, but they're not awful, particularly for the pricetag.

My Husky box has been just fine for staying in one place and holding tools. I definitely don't have it loaded up as heavily as some others, but the slides are smooth and it does what I need it to do.

I wouldn't buy a husky tool box. If i was going to buy one I'd get a Milwaukee. My buddy has one they seem to have better craftsmanship. If i had a couple extra gs id step up and get a SO or mac.

You know, it's not bad. it's better than nothing. But I would suggest this 27" is a better deal.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-2...Chest-in-Textured-Black-UAT-H-26051/303764045

It has better drawer slides, is just better made over all and I like having the shallow drawers.

And if you can swing it, the US General one is better yet, again more drawers allows more organizing possibilities. Unless you keep all your tools in the blow molded cases, then maybe it's not ideal.

I have the Husky mobile workstation, and I think the Husky boxes are not bad. I compare it to the Craftsman 26" box/chest I have from around 2000.

The thing about the Husky boxes, and even Milwaukee. Is that each individual box seems to be made by someone different to different specs. So it really depends on the particular box. Some of them are quite good, others maybe not so much, it just depends.

I have 4 of their smaller boxes. They are nice and I have no regrets.

I bought a 61" (IIRC) top and bottom about 5 years ago. I have my sockets/ratchets in the top drawer. About a year after owning it and light to moderate use, two of the slides broke.

Since when does HF bring in a lower-grade box (from their normal stuff) to offer for sales?

About the only difference is one has a pull out drawer that has a flip up wood worktop. That one is not listed online as even being available anywhere. Called the store and I guess it’s just something special they got in.

I'm box shopping too and found the same anomaly at both of my local HDs. I'm pretty sure that one with the wood worktop is "version 3" of that toolbox and that the others on the floor are version 2. V2 also has taller bottom drawers, and 6 casters instead of 4.

There's actually a page for V3 of the box but if you load it directly from Home Depot's site, it errors out with a "Product Not Available" message. But I was able to see specs (some appear to be erroneous; it definitely has soft-close drawers and the manual says it has a 5yr warranty) on the Google Cache version of the page. Google for the full model number: H52CH6TR9HDV3 , and then choose the Cached page. I'd post a direct link but this is my first post so I can't :rolleyes2 . I honestly think that the V3 was put out just a little early but there's a tag on the floor for it at my local store.

Hope this helps you. The box seems well-built to me for the price but I'm no expert. It seems heaps better than the non-heavy-duty Husky on the floor, and even if it's not necessarily better than the US Generals the soft-closing of the drawers may have won me over.

Was it Husky or Harbor Freight?

hf never done a 61" . husky did have a flimsy 61"

Sorry, yes, it was the Husky 61". The top box is pretty nice, but the bottom one is pretty flimsy. I haven't got around to buying new slides for it yet. I've never replaced any on any box so I'm not sure how easy/difficult it is. I can't imagine it's too bad?

When I google that all I get is the non wooden drawer top one, which they seem to always stock. As an update, they still sell the wooden one for 100 off at 898. So much for the special they were running then!

I came across this thread after I started researching the Husky 52 inch top and bottom tool box set that Home Depot sells.
There seems to be at least two different sets available and I'm trying to figure out the differences, they are about a fifty dollar bill apart in cost. One is listed as "heavy duty" and the other as "industrial"
Anyone know what's what with these ?
