So i need some opinons, i've been wanting to get a decent amount of tools in a case that i can have at home and easily throw into my truck and go if needed. I found this husky set at hd and its my "christmas present" from the GF and the reviews are nice and i haven't opened it yet.

My question is will it be decent and has anyone used their wrenches with the "special' teeth that can do a bunch of different heads or will i be dissapointed and just return it?

I'm not a big fan of Husky, nor the kits like you have the link to (personal preference)

BUT, for what you are looking for (tool set in a case), it will work. Warranty should be easy, considering HD's are popping up almost every other town.

More important, it was a GIFT from your GF. If you return it, it might make her feel bad or disappointed (not really sure how she would react). Is it worth it to make her feel bad?

I would keep it.

I've used these those. I don't do a ton of wrenching and I havent used nicer wrenches to compare them to but they have done fine for me. No complaints really and they don't seem to strip out.
Like said above, if it's a truck box it should do fine for you. An the whole gift thing

Well it is a gift, thou she has to pay me first since i wasn't gonna let her use her debit card at HD and i'm paying for half of it always so she wouldn't be to mad.

I mainly want a set here at home so i don't have to bring home tools everytime i'm gonna jump into something and i figure i can pick up wrenches else where if they are really crappy. I've got a hd right near me which is definetly a plus.

Son-in-law has a lot of Husky in his pick up for away from home, but his garage is such a mess that he usually uses them on the driveway too. They do the job just fine.

I'm ticked off that i missed the 230 piece for $99 but this seems like a decent deal and will not be a main tool set so i can make due with not being the best quality to.

If you don't need the very best for the truck box, Husky mechanics sets should be fine. They're inexpensive, easily warrantied and best of all a gift from the GF. Quality is actually decent and the ratchets are fine toothed. After a time when you need to step up in quality, the Husky can be relegated to loaner status or donated to a budding diyer.

My hd still has that big set for $99. I would just ask them to give it to you for a hundred if you cannot find one for $99

Wait a little , they usually drop in price just prior to or after Xmas to move all the holiday stock. I think I have seen the Husky tool kits close to 50% off the so called regular price.

Interesting, the price I paid is not a sale price so maybe they will drop the price thou they only had 1 kit at my store so maybe I'll have to see if they price match.

Ever since they started requiring a receipt for life time warranty exchanges I've stopped buying husky. When they break they get trashed or used to make modified tools and once they are all gone that's the end for husky tools in my box.

Most of mine are fine, except for the adjustable wrenches. They are just awful. The warranty is sketchy at best.

you can thank dirt cheap building supplies for that. buy a broken set for 4 bucks....take it and get a new 30 dollar set.

i would look at sears outlet for a big mechanics set in craftsman. they will be usa. even if you buy in store or online from sears, the sears china is better than husky china, IMO.

ive never liked the husky ratchets. their sockets are ok. the wrenches have big open ends, but most china stuff will.

I have never needed a receipt for warrantying husky,I brought in some broke as **** husky tapes about a couple months ago and had no issues warrantying them. Go to a different home depot, yours might just be a jackasses.

You might be right on the craftsman deal but HD is really close versus accross town to get to sears and I'm surprised they haven't closed the store down yet..

I've got a husky pliers set for st home and its not bad, the tools at HD I felt weren't to bad thou is a obvious step down from snap on.

I am sure that set would prove good for most uses, especially home use.

I started wrenching with a Husky Pro set [taiwan made] and I still have all the ratchets. I am now a "pro" wrench and still use them at work.

Only had to one ratchet. Not from the original kit i purchased. It was exchanged with no issues. Customer service department took care of everything for me. No receipt required.

Good luck.

When I checked the HD site, all of the Husky tool sets had been discontinued. The set referenced looks to have about 50 allen wrenches and screwdriver bits. Also, many of the tools are SAE sizes so won't be much use unless you are working on older American cars.

This Williams set on Amazon is all metric, and with the addition of a pair of channellocks and needle nose pliers would be a nice set of high quality tools for working on cars for not much more than the HD set.

(Edited to correct url).

This url shows the contents of the set on the Snap-on Industrial Brands site:

thats a lot of bread, but that's not a bad kit.
looks like it covers most things youlle need around the house or on the road or on a trip to the junkyard.
like others have said the warranty factor is nice, but if they aint your 8 hour a day 5 days a week tools i kinda dought warranty will come into play unless you abuse your tools.

It is Taiwan.

I have been wanting that set ever since I first saw it, but I have spent about $150 on tools the last 3 weeks so will have to wait. It just looks like a good basic set in a case that is really well suited for working on cars. I inherited a few Williams tools from my father and hope these are as good.

Husky is hit or miss. Wheras for $200 bucks you could do well for yourself even without leaving the tool isle at HD. So i'd try to free up $100 bucks somehow from this deal by talking them down or by looking at a smaller socket set and building out a bit with a normal box. That organizer box is really cool, but it would be even better if the second pull out shelf was a blank to hold pliers/hammer/screwdrivers. It might take a little more budget to include those things but you will realy want them in a grab and go.

Edit: I like that williams set for $200 alot better. I'd have more faith in the williams brand for wrenches and hex bits etct, plus they have real screwdrivers.

Husky at Home Depot is made in China

Kobalt at Lowes is made in Taiwan

Taiwan is great quality - China, typically, not so much.

both have a no questions asked warranty, and have kind of replaced Sears in this regard.

and avoid these silly sockets and wrenches that claim to work on both SAE and Metric, all they will do is round off fasteners, use the correct size wrench or socket! - preferably 6-point (in sockets).

These "universal" sockets & wrenches are a marketing ploy designed to extract money from homeowners who don't know anything about tools, or their wives or girlfriends. It's shameful!

I was always sketchy about husky tools until I bought someone a small set for xmas. I was impressed because the ratchet is actually good quality and smoothly polished . The sockets are very good also. I got like a40 piece set and I have been using it for all my projects for2 years. Including engine and transmission projects. It's definitely a very good brand.

Nah. You don't want a 200 dollar chinese set.:bounce:

I'm not a wrench guy but spline wrenches make me want to use them less than 12 point. On e-torx? Sure! On a hex bolt? Lol no. Don't seem right. I use the sockets in 1/4 sometimes but finally got a decent 1/4 set so that will probably stop. Didn't see any noticeable damage from use and I can't really say they're garbage, just...feels like black magic and I'm not a warlock.

Yeah, at least get Taiwan or something -- Tekton or ? Even USA made Craftsman. I think there was like a 150 piece Craftsman Industrial or Professional set for like $275. Sure you could get by with the Husky set, but it will probably made repairing stuff a little more of a pain in the *** with each turn of the wrench or ratchet.

As someone who has about 80% of his tool collection composed of Husky tools, they a decent tool manufacturer for the price.

I started collecting Husky brand stuff back in the mid-1990s when alot of their stuff was still made in USA. At the time their lifetime guarantee was much like Sears. You walk in, let customer service know the tool is broken and they replaced it no questions asked. As a gearhead teenager this was pretty awesome as Husky was much cheaper than craftsman and still made a really good product that could be warrantied much in the same way Craftsman is.

Sometime around 2001-2002 they started going overseas with there stuff and quality went WAAAAAAY down hill. But within the last 3 years they have been making a much greater effort in bringing their tools up to par with other overseas manufacturers. If anything their stuff today is just as good as it was in the 1990s and they have a much bigger selection of stuff than they ever did before.

Their new stuff is mostly composed of made in China, but I've found a bunch of stuff from Taiwan and Mexico too. As far as warranties go these days, just keep your receipt as a just in case ordeal. The warranties are honored differently from store to store. I've had stores request receipts and stores just take things back no questions asked. But as of late the local HD takes Husky stuff back without a receipt.

Would I spend the money in question on the OP's tool set? Yes BUT... Purchase it sometime after Christmas if its a seasonal item. I do nearly all my tool shopping around this time because they drop the prices WAAAAAAAAY down to get rid of seasonal inventory.

Wrong.

They will work and not round out fasteners. I was given a Metrinch set when they first came out and they worked fine for removing rusted exhaust manifold bolts. Worked better than the 6 point Snappy & Mac's and the 12 point Bonney that I tried first. using the Metrinch, i got all the bolts out.

Do a search on GJ and you will find I am not the only who has had used them when nothing else worked.

Might want to try them sometime.......

Its really a shame how they have gone down hill. I have an older set that is USA made and they are top notch, right there with any of the big names. The new ones are just plain old foreign made cheap wrenches.

I have had this set for a few years now and own several other husky tools including one of their 41" boxes. I have not had a problem out of them and would recommend them for any home / part time mechanic any day of the week. Most of the Husky tools that I do own were made either by gear wrench or were made by Stanley (I think thats the same parent company).

I bought a husky ratchet years ago that is extendable or shrinkable with a flex head both of which have locks. It's held up to some serious abuse.

I also bought some reversible ratchet wrenches within the last 6 months that got some serious use pulling the motor in my truck.

With that being said I probably won't invest in anymore husky because I have noticed their stuff doesn't look as good as when I bought my ratchet.

For your intended use, that Husky set should be fine. Throw in a couple of US-made Channellock pliers and set of US-made Husky screwdrivers and you'll have a decent set of tools for around the house.
