Husky wrenches not sized right?

I ran into an issue the other day where I needed a 15/16" wrench to remove a nut. I couldn't use a socket due to how the part is designed. I didn't have such a wrench and couldn't wait to order a USA made one.

I bought a Husky wrench at Home Depot for about $8. It looked a lot nicer than the $11 Allied wrench at Fleet Farm. However, when I placed the open end over the nut it was really loose. I ended up needing to use the box end anyhow and that seemed fine. (The nut fit perfectly in my 15/16" socket and I confirmed the nut is 5/8"-11 thread at the hardware store.)

I confirmed the nut is really 15/16" so is the Husky wrench just poorly made?

Without measurements of the wrench opening and the nut no one here can say if things you have are in spec or not. Give us the real numbers you measure with a caliper at least and then we can make a decision if the problem is a cockpit error or a tool/fastener problem..

What do you expect for $8?

I expected a wrench that is at least sized right. I really didn't want to wait a week or more to order a Wright wrench from Harry Epstein. I'll have to measure it with a micrometer when I go over to my friend's house later this week. I forgot that Menards carries USA made Masterforce wrenches and I should have picked up one of those instead.

I also need a 13/16" wrench and I plan to order that from Harry Epstein. HJE's website is not working properly right now so I'll have to order tomorrow. I should just order a full set of Wright wrenches, but I really don't want to spend the money just now.

It could be a quality control issue :dunno:

Those new husky wrenches are pretty ugly with the lobster claw open end but, I haven't really heard about any issues of fit. Take it back to Home Depot and compare it to another wrench or get your $8 back.

I've always had good luck buying older American made wrenches at swap meets, pawn shops and garage sales. That said, if a person needs one pronto...

I am going to take the wrench over to a friend's house in a few days to measure with his caliper. If it is out of spec I will return it to Home Depot.

I decided to order a closeout set of Wright/Williams wrenches from Harry Epstein for $95 that go from 3/8" to 1" so I don't have to worry about not having good wrenches again. They have another closeout set for another $70 that also adds 1-1/16", 1-1/8", and 1-1/4", but I can't justify the extra $70 right now. I suppose I'll need one of those sizes as soon as I place my order for the smaller set.

I have been sick with pneumonia for a while so I didn't get around to measuring my Husky wrench for a while. The wrench measures .952" while the max is supposed to be .949". I ended up returning the wrench to Home Depot.

I bought a set of wrenches from Harry Epstein in the meantime. The 15/16" Wright wrench measures .947" which is right in the middle of the specs.

Good job, sorry to hear about your pneumonia. HJE rocks and you'll love the Wrights.

use your new wrench a few times, then measure it again and see if its still measures 0.947" . Hard to believe that 3/1000" is too much slop.
