hvac compressor not turning on?

I don't know why air conditioners always break on the weekend. My ac was cooling fine earlier this afternoon, so I came home later this evening and turned the ac on and noticed it wasn't cooling. The air handler and the outside unit still work, but it's not cooling. The outside unit gives a brief buzz and then the fan turns on. It's pretty quiet, so I'm thinking the compressor isn't turning on. The company that installed it isn't open on the weekends I don't think, so should I call someone else? This is a goodman system and is only maybe 3 years old now and it's supposed to have a 10 year warranty. Can any company do a warranty claim? I'm thinking the capaciter went out, is that even something under warranty?

First check to see if your compressor is hot, maybe trip on internal overload. If not then it’s possible it’s capacitor, but I have also seen burnt wires that just needed to be connected.
Warranty, well your repair may be under warranty if you’re willing to wait. I never seen an HVAC company that was closed on weekends. I never got weekends off

It must be a TX thing, because around here all HVAC businesses that I know of are closed on weekends, including mine.

Some but not all will take emergency calls (no heat during winter or a grocery store freezer that quit working, for example. A faulty residential A/C is not an emergency 99% of the time.)

Some hardware stores like Ace might carry a capacitor.

You obviously, have never been to Texas in July! AN A/C that is not working then can be life threatening. Most a/+ companies here have an answering service 24/7, and at least you can get a call back on the weekends. This time of year most will just tough it out for a weekend instead of paying for a Sunday call out.

Yeah it pretty much is life or death at certain times of the year. It's a lot better now than it was earlier in the year though.

When I ran roads doing service calls it was from can to can’t. Just about 7 days week, come fall or winter that’s when got little rest. Basically it was make pay check while you can or not. Different times now days so maybe companies are giving their guy’s weekend off. But I still see service trucks making calls on weekends

The company i used has been in business for 50 years. They came out today and threw a new capacitor in it. All covered under warranty

The two things I always keep on hand are a contactor and a capacitor. One of them invariably fails on the hottest long weekend and both are are cheap and super easy to install.

They aren't the cheapest, but they'll fix the problem the first time

Yeah, but you can't just put any capacitor in there. You have to look and see which one is in there

Yes, of course. But it takes less the 5 minutes to pull the service cover off the condenser and look at the side of the cap for it's value. Barring that, you can probably google your condenser model number along with "capacitor" to find the cap part number. Ditto for the contactor.

Not in July, but I've been there in August of 2013 and I remember it being quite hot !

Like I said, a TX thing.
