HVAC design for shop

Hi, I’m trying to plan out a enclosed loft build and I do not know what to use for HVAC. I will preface that I reside in Arizona, the shop was pre insulated, and I want to cool the enclosed room/loft and the working shop when needed. A few guys in the neighborhood have cooled these with 2-3 ton mini splits.

I have looked at 1 mini split in the loft, and 2 in the shop? Seems a little less efficient but I’m not sure. Any help or ideas to consider would be helpful.

Also wasn’t sure if a standard design would work with a dual zone setup, but not sure if that works since there will be enclosed spaces.


Specs 52’x 25’x 16’ high. Planned on splitting The difference of the loft. 8’ish.

I would install a 36k btu dual mini-split with two 18k evaporators set on opposite walls about a qtr of the way from the door walls. That will give you the best air circulation. Not sure I follow on the loft as it will be a pretty short space.

Where is the loft? Hard to tell

I'd start with a load calculation to see what you need for btu's.

If not, then just save yourself some time and copy the other setups if you think it's "good enough".

I'd perform a Manual J, for sure, but I'd say that a 3-ton mini-split with dual indoor coils will definitely solve your problem. Depending on the quality of the insulation and losses from the doors, you might even be in the 2-ton range, but only a Manual J will tell. Prefer Daikin, Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu as potential brands.
