You need some good practice and understand the feel for those schrader core removal tools. If you mess up and catch the core or the guts pull out of the core you are screwed. I would never recommended one to a novice. Use a good k-type clamp in a compatible meter tape it to the pipe then cover in insulation tape. You may have a .1f different reading then the internal of the pipe but it is trivial. But there is no chance of losing your system charge either.

If you just want to play around with your own stuff at home Id look on craigslist or a pawn shop for a set of gauges and tools from somebody who got out of the business.;)
