HVAC issue

hi everyone. I’ve got a heat pump with fau installed and it recently started to stop functioning sporadically. I’ve noticed that resetting the breakers on the electrical seems to reset the system and get it blowing hot air for a few hours, but then the pump will randomly turn off and the fan will keep blowing without heat.

I replaced filters and checked for refrigerant leaks, but that’s not the culprit. Maybe a dying start capacitor? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Check your capacitors. Depending on age of your unit, replace them proactively. I did all 3 of mine on my 12 YO AC for under $100. If you can wire a light switch, you can DIY.

If its a fairly modern system, it should have a control board that will display errors. Find the model number on it, then find the install/repair manual online. It will show how to find the error codes.

Thanks for the suggestions. As a quick follow up:

I’ve noticed that resetting FAU breaker resets everything. The Nest Thermostat will then run a delay for 2 minutes and then the system works. The fan turns on and there’s an audible call for heat (is that the Freon passing thru the pipes)? The system then runs for about 30 minutes and then fails to make continual calls for heat. The fan then continues to run and just circulates the air in the house while the Nest says it’s heating.

I have a tech coming out later this week, but any other help would be great if this narrows it down.

THANKS!!!

There have been a couple of threads here where the culprit is at least partially the Nest thermostat.

I'd try a different thermostat before chasing a repair ghost, or at least "hotwire" it at the equipment and see if it runs for more than 30 minutes.

Also make sure that the settings are correct.

Some newer thermostats have a built in random delay so that every AC unit doesn't turn on at the same time, not sure if the nest does but that might be your two minute delay. Are you using a MM to see if its sending power to the heat wire?
