So I have my new 60k Hot Dawg I will be hanging and hooking up this weekend. The install book says when venting vertically the cap only needs to be 24" from the roof measured horizontally from the vent cap. I also remember being told that the vent cap needs to clear the peak of the roof.

Which is correct? I can do either but the 24" would mean a shorter vent pipe and cheaper bill. I don't personally care I just want to do it right.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan the code reads the vent cap should be 2 feet above the peak so sorry but that means more pipe for you buuuuuuuuuuuut better extra money on pipe than a roof or worse :D.

Well it looks like I will plan to clear the peak. 2 foot above the peak sounds a little excessive. I did a little research in the form of looking at furnace vents as I was driving around last night and I seen some below the peak but most just cleared it.

In the Pacific Northwest it's two feet from the roof measured horizontally from the chimney cap. So on a 12:12 pitch your cap would be two feet high whereas on a lesser slope your chimney would be shorter.

Thats what the install booklet says to do. My roof being a 5:12 pitch would not take much to get to the 2 foot mark.

Dan:

Just hooked-up my ADP Cayanne here in Apple Valley, Mn. Did my research to the point of overkill. Pulled both the mechanical and electrical permits. Even bought a copy of the Gas Code. Although they are very general, the venting requirements are spelled-out in your owners manual (Pg. 12). You only need to be eight feet away from any structure if you are vertically venting and your vent cap is 12-inches in diameter or less (as type B gas vent caps for 3-inch diameter pipe are). Assuming you have this size vent cap, there is no rule that says you have to clear the ridge of the roof. There is also a chart that tells you how high above the roof opening your vent cap has to be based on pitch of roof. Regardless, the hight of the vertical vent pipe has to be at least 5 feet above the power exhauster outlet. Really a lot of confusing data.
