HVLP gun regulator

Hi all, I’m setting up a hvlp gun. I have a dedicated circuit for this with its own regulator, line, and water separator.
Do I really need those small regulators at the gun? I mean I have one for this line already. Seems maybe a small pressure gage at the gun, but the pressure can be adjusted at the main regulator for this circuit. Just trying to save a little…and this seems redundant as long as you have a gage at the gun?

Pro car painters will run 90-100 psi to the gun mounted regulator, and then reduce to the required pressure at the gun. It has come up on some paint and body forums that some of the gun mounted ones aren't true regulators but rather more like a needle valve. You can tell by adjusting the regulator with the trigger pulled and then watch the gauge once the trigger is released. A true regulator will maintain the set pressure while the adjustable orifice type will climb to full line pressure.

Surprizingly the gun regulator that comes with the HF purple cheapy is a real regulator. No reason not to have one at that price.

I also use a 3/8 hose to keep from getting that pressure drop from air compressor to gun. The quick connects will also create a drop in psi but that is something I read about the quick connects. Does it matter, like others had said painting parts or just make something old look good is question. Sounds like your just starting out, so give it try see if you notice difference. HF has guns on sale without coupon is I think 20.00 with regulator

I run full pressure to the regulator on the gun. I set the regulator on the gun with the trigger pulled. But that is what works for me.

That's what I would have to do; I have an old Finish Line color gun and that thing takes some serious air. Pressure drop is a big effect on it.
