HVLP Paint Setup?

Alright guys, I recently picked up this used Speedaire 7.5hp 80 gallon 2 stage compressor thanks to some of your help. I wanted to get your input on how to setup this compressor.

I live north of humid Atlanta. Check the setup below, should I add a Harbor Freight Central Pneumatic Refrigerated Air Dryer in between the compressor and tank? I could also add a desiccant filter to my setup below. Or would an in line Desiccant filter off the hvlp gun be best?

I also use this compressor for sanding, an air hammer, blow gun, die grinder, etc. as well.

I was looking for an all in one spray gun; did I do alright? Is there anything else I should add to the below list?

The paint gun kit, filter setup and hose are fine. Personally I would not use and electronic tank drain - waste of money in my opinion, unless you plan on running the compressor 24/7. I'd just add a pipe and ball valve and drain off the water periodically during heavy use at the end of the day. I use an air gauge and small filter at the gun to set pressure and to catch any moisture that may make it to the gun. You do need a respirator for painting.

So I have some questions for you... Are you planning to run you hose directly off the tank? Where are placing the compressor? Do you plan to run a hard air line, copper, RapidAir, or other hard line type? How large is you shop? What do you plan on painting?

Thanks for the response. I will probably do the same with a filter right on the gun.

I have a half face respirator and a couple of types of filters. Is this sufficient? I am going to build a makeshift paint booth (pvc, painters plastic, box fan). Are there specific filters needed?

I have never owned a compressor. I was going to leave the compressor filled, but not on when not in use. I figured the drain would be a good set it and forget it way to go about draining.

I haven’t fully decided how I was going to setup the filters. I was thinking either solid pipe or flex line off of the compressor, to the filter setup on the wall, to a coupler off of that for the line. I have a 6’ whip with a ball valve for the end of the hose, though I am unsure if I should use this with the paint gun. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to copper/hard lines or 3/8 hose for the filter lines directly off the compressor?

I am going to paint an 85 F150 that was previously my mud/trail truck in college. I am looking to get it decently nice and sell/trade it. I want a dentside Bronco or Scout when I get another fun truck, but right now I really want to start my first mountain/track build on a BMW 2002, E30, or E36. I have a number of builds planned for each as well as other cars (914s, RX7s, etc.). Also, I have at least a couple of panels to paint on my DD LLY Duramax.

The “shop” is my roommate’s 2 car garage. It is a bit larger than your typical 2 car garage, and the single door makes a huge difference. I am already taking up far more than half of the perimeter with my stuff.

I live in Columbia, South Carolina. I was thinking that I needed an air dryer also, in the beginning. I am not painting, but running a blast cabinet. The compressor I have is only 5 hp and I have a ball valve and an auto drain that runs briefly, each time the compressor cycles. I have zero moisture in my air, simply running 2 inline, water separators, the 2nd separator is right at the cabinet. Before spending all that money, I would see what you actually need, by doing some test runs, may save a lot money and time.

You need a respirator suitable for automotive paint. Visit your local automotive paint store and they'll hook you up... I use the 3M masks with the cartridges.

Google homemade paint booths and you'll find plenty of ideas on how to set up a temp paint booth. Be prepared to cover all your stuff, the floor, etc when you paint, otherwise you'll have paint on everything, especially when you shoot clear coat.

I have a compressor in my shop that I do shoot paint with, quality guns, iwata, Sata, etc. However, I purchased a turbine paint setup several,months ago that I plan on using to reshoot the hood and rear bumper on my '07 Mustang.

Before you sink a bunch of money in you air compress setup you should checkout the turbine paint systems. I purchased one from TP Tools came with a couple guns, etc. I did test it out by sprayer some lacquer thinner through the gun and I think it will work fine.

Plenty of videos on line with guys using the turbines, less overspray, no condensation, etc.
