Any of the big names work. Sata, Devilbis, Binks, etc.

If you only use it once in a while for non-car painting projects look at Craigslist for deals. Us guys who paint daily like to get the "latest and greatest" guns every few years. The old ones aren't worth much, but still work good.

I have a Fuji 4 HVLP system that is pretty nice. I have done some boat painting with it and gotten very good results. Are you planning to use a compressor, or get a Turbine system? Mine is the Turbine unit, and does a great job, plus you don't need a giant compressor.

The DeVilbiss startingline series sounds like something to look at. One vendor is tcpglobal.com, I like them a lot. They're also on eBay under the same name and have very good reviews.

I'd also recommend you get a few of the 'Paintucation' DVDs from Kevin Tetz. They're crammed with information.

What sort of compressor are you running? 60 gal and 11 cfm @ 90 psi are minimums for painting cars I hear. A 30 gal Craftsman will send water through the line long before you're done with half the vehicle.

The Startingline series is Devilbiss' attempt at competing with harbor freight. You just pay more for the name but the quality is the same or worse. Finishline is the bottom end for a true Devilbiss gun.

The Paintucation videos are crammed with information. Unfortunately a lot of it is wrong. Search on some of the auto body forums for laughs about his mistakes.

My compressor is a 30 gal Porter Cable that puts out about 7 cfm. With a simple desiccant drier (mandatory for any paint work) and a good LVLP gun I can paint a full size car with no problems. Can't do a van. As long as your tank doesn't drop to below what the gun needs at the end of the job, you're good. I've done touchups away from home with just a 10 gal portable tank.

But my question for the OP is are you looking for a gun or one of those turbine units that everyone calls HLVP?

Thanks for your responses
Maybe I should post more info

I have plenty of dry air. I powder coat with a IR 2 stage 80 gal 12 or 13 cfm (??) with a IR refrigerated drier

My son & I will be starting a 79 911 ground up resto & plan to PC parts that will fit in my oven. The body is nice on this car, so prep shouldn't be to bad (I know, famous last words)

My last painting was yrs ago when we would throw lots of paint at hi psi & some would hit the car, most was all over my shop

All of that said, Looking for a HVLP or LVLP setup that will wit into my operation
Thanks for your advice

Love to hear more about this. What sort of desiccant filter are you using?

http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/8055757/Compressor-Components/Desiccant-Air-Dryer

Very simple but works great. I can run a sandblaster, which is a bit more than my compressor can handle, with no moisture coming through. Without it, even an orbital sander will have a mist coming out the exhaust.

Thanks. Did yours come with desiccant? The review on the website said it didn't, and ripped Princess Auto for false advertising. Was that guy a grouch or does it not come with the pellets?

Edit-- just checked the site again, media not included per the description (a little vague) and the Q&A section edited Jan 9th.
