Hello everyone,

I just came back from an equipment auction and i brought with me a box full of automotive equipment and tools, and 5 HVLP spray guns, Devilbiss, SATA, Binks..etc wich i am happy about because these guns are crazy expensive, i got the whole box for $175.

Now, these guns need some serious cleaning, it looks like some of them got some paint stuck dry inside, the needle is moving fine and i can remove the caps and everything, but i can see that it is dirty inside.

on a normal day i would use a paint thinner, and some scrubbing, but i was wondering if anyone got some extensive experience cleaning heavy deposits, and some good technique or tricks to give these guns a brand new look.

if so please let me know
thanks

Well.. paint stripper will clean them right up.. but ya better make sure you get it ALL out afterwards... & make sure all the packings etc are removed when you take them down to their component parts for cleaning.
Looks like you have 3M PPS adaptors, or maybe Devilbis DeKups adaptors on 2 of the guns.

You should be able to download the manuals/parts breakdowns from the web.

I have used Epoxy Paint Thinner to clean up a paint gun. You can buy small cans of it. Nasty stuff so make sure you have ventilation.

Like the man said paint stripper and rinse it all out . Get rebuild kits and install . For future use gun wash for cleaning . The Sata Gravity guns are great and the throw away pots are a god send . If you don't want to dispose of the consumables then clean them .

I take mine completely apart once a month and dunk the body, needle, air cap and fluid tip in a disposable quart mixing cup full of paint stripper. Let sit for a day and blast the power washer through the body and parts. Rest of the parts get cleaned up quick with thinner before reassembly.

They also make solvent especially formulated for spray guns.

It's called...

Wait for it...

Spray gun cleaner.

Most automotive paint shops carry it. Mine does.

alright it took me 3 hours soaking and scrubing ONE gun, and let me say that the **** that came off is filthy it looks like one of those guns was used for priming, the container that i used turned all gray and still i had to scrub big time to get the hardned material out, who ever had these guns didnt really care.

The second one is left soaking overnight in an HVLP cleaning solvant that i picked up from Home depot i am not gonna spend 3 hours for each one. but at least it looks and feels way better than before, 3 more to go.

i have a question though, when i took the fan and meterial fluid controls off, i noticed that there was some sort of grease like a white lithium grease on the spring and the trigger system!! is that suppoed to be like that? should i put some grease back once all clean?

and thanks all for the replies
