HVLP spray guns for cabinet lacquer

Has anyone had success using HVLP spray guns for spraying lacquer on cabinets. What brand have you had success with as I would use the gun for automotive spraying as well.

I assume by HVLP, you mean gravity fed? That is a common mistake made by many. gravity cup guns don't mean it is HVLP. HVLP guns come in many types including gravity, suction, pressure pot, and even airless.

You will need to get a nozzle combo that matches viscosity of the lacquer. The avg spray gun has a 1.4mm nozzle, thick coatings will use 1.8 to 2.0. If it is very thick, you can use a pressure pot sprayer.

I spray lacquer with a gravity HVLP gun quite frequently. My main gun is a DeVilbiss but I've also had some really good results from a cheap Harbor Freight gun.

Both do the same job and as far as spray quality goes, one is NOT better then the other. However, gravity guns do have some advantages. Suction guns waste paint because the suction tube does not reach the very bottom of the cup, where gravity guns use the entire paint. Gravity guns have much more accessory options like disposable cup systems, & liners. Not many company's are making new stuff for suction guns anymore. And the biggest advantage of gravity guns is comfort. (for me anyway)


The disadvantage of gravity guns is the spray pattern changes as your material drops unless you use liners or something like the Dee-kups.

Another big advantage for gravity guns in my opinion: much easier to clean.

Gravity guns use all of your material. Suction guns are more easily handled for spraying large amounts of material. Gravity guns become drastically unbalanced with a full cup of material.
