Certain operators at work complain about speed of their machine slowing down and we know it's not. One guy we just go to the hyd unit, act like we made an adjustment and he's happy for a month or more.
Another operator was making adjustments himself screwing things up. Management wouldn't do anything so we plumbed the original pressure reducing valve and gage that does nothing except change the Gage's reading. A second reducing valve and gage is mounted discretely that actually controls that part of the circuit . Operator can make all the changes he wants and is happy as a pig in **** yet it changes nothing.

That's very funny stuff right there!

I'm not a hydraulic expert by any means.. but it seems to me pressure being on the EITHER line should not cause a seal to blow. Why would the seal know which direction the fluid is flowing in? Most hydraulic motors I have experience with are reversible, many tools like jack hammers and tampers have sudden hard stops.. if the pump was shut down with still pressure in the lines, the quick connects (like air hose fittings) were almost impossible to remove without releasing pressure from the line first, but I've never had anything blow from it.

Again - I am not the best person to be asking, but it sounds to me like your issue is somewhere in the motor.

I looked a new Mid State brush hog today, that a guy bought from a Richie Bros. auction

The motor has a internal relief valve, but the hoses are plumbed just like other Garage Journal members recommended. an H shape arrangement with a normal check valve

The pictures are the same machine sold at Hess Auctioneers
