I'm a hydraulic dummy and I've got a few nagging questions about hydraulic jack oil ...

1) does the oil need to be changed over a time interval? I've heard some folks change the oil every 2 years.

2) are all oils essentially the same, or are some of higher quality that others? If there is a difference, are there certain brand names to buy?

3) how much fluid should you put into the reservoir? Is overfilling bad?

Thanks!

1) Dependant on the Type of Resevoir System (Sealed or Vented) and the type of Life its Lived, Its sometimes beneficial to Change the Oil. Especially if its seen any time outside and possibly been exposed to Rain etc..

2) Most of your Hydraulic "Jack" oil is gonna be similar in weight and carry additives to prevent foaming/Anti Rust etc... Obviously if you work in a Extreme Cold enviroment there are Lighter Weight Oils that are gonna be Beneficial and provide better performance.

3) All Jacks are Different in regards to Capacity's, Overfilling is Bad and can cause Poor Performance. Always refer to the owners Manual for Capacity and or Filling instructions.

Thanks for your knowledge HiBall.

Am I to presume the vented form of reservoir is the type that needs to occasionally be changed? Do you have relative time interval where you think oil may be beneficial to change? I.e. years, decades?

So the hydraulic jack oil found in Walmart would be just as good as stuff from a specialty store?

There's No.. Real Interval for Oil Changes, Even the Vented Reservoirs have some filter material/mesh to cut down on Contaminents. You will be fine with the Jack oil from Wally World.
