Has anyone hooked up a Porat Power unit to their engine hoist so that you dont have to be at the cylinder to operate it?

Would that allow lowering the ram, as well?

I've got an air-over-hydraulic ram on mine, and the air lead is fairly long, allowing me to raise the ram without being right next to the cylinder. It's proven quite handy.

Can't lower it without being at the ram, however.

I don't think a portapower pump has the reservoir to handle the long stroke. I am just thinking that the ram OD and length are larger and longer than my Enerpac hand pump. Definitely some of the ram is taken up by the steel rod and the internal reservoir but the ram has to be filled behind by fluid.

So, extending that...maybe a hot setup is both pumps in parallel (either could feed the ram cylinder). Youd use the original ram to rough-position the arm, then go remote so you can watch closely and micro-inch it into or out-of place. The reservoirs could get out of balance if you did a lot of bleeding with the remote pump but as long as it was reasonable it should work.

As to where to drill the first hole in the side of the ram, I am not sure :bounce:

WARNING: RED NECK ENGINEERING AHEAD

So the larger picture is that I'm mounting my engine hoist off the back of the back of a small trailer, and the engineer in my head was thinking it would be nice to be able to 1. control it by not having to get between the load and the lift, 2. control it from either side, and 3. have more user friendly. I have a hydrolic steering setup from a boat that i'm gonna try to "engineer" to work.

Its been that long I would have to pull one of these apart to check, but it can be done. Remove a few balls and plug some holes.
Trouble is most manual porta power pump will not have enough oil capacity. Companies like Enerpac and Power team do make some larger manual units. Rare second hand and expensive new.
I had a 12volt hydraulic pump under the bench for years before I decided to fit it to my crane. One speed to raise with a two speed down. One for no load. The other with a flow control valve for various loads.
I made the ram to suit. Increased stroke so the end of the jib goes from floor to ceiling. Just have to watch I don`t put it through the low roof in one section of the garage. The cylinder bore is larger so as to keep pump pressure down saving on battery life.

I have done a similar thing with a pneumatic pump but I wanted this to be free from air lines being trailed around after it.
