hydraulic press safety shield

While using my Dake 25-ton press the other day to press out some front axle u-joints, I realized that at any given time, something could "pop" and send a projectile flying across the workshop or straight into me!

Has anyone ever added a protective screen or shield to their press? Maybe some expanded metal that clamps to the table?

you would have to remind me, I've been going to make an expanded metal shield for mine. built the press a year ago,never got around to the shield. a shield is a very good thing for the very reason you mention.

I do a lot of sheet metal bending on mine and that's not to "projectile" intensive but, if I am doing something that is, I throw a welding blanket around it as best as I can to capture the work and still see what is going on. Never had an event yet but it's quick and easy to do and is better then nothing.

I use an old scatter shield blanket from back when we were tractor pulling.

Saw a coworker lose his front teeth when a ball bearing exploded while pressing it. Never forget that.

Those things scare the hell outta me. We had some issues with the one at work, not me , but I had a scare or two on it over the years. One guy on the night shift had something explode in his face and got a trip to the hospital from it. He got off lucky.

In high school I worked for an auto parts store. We had a small fixture to press bearings off rear axles. It was a 2 piece cover held on with muffler u-bolts. The first bearing I pressed came apart and the puller parts came apart. After that, once I felt heavy pressure, I stepped aside and turned away from the fixture. Almost all of the bearings did the same thing.
