Hydraulic pump for press, sell it or keep it??

I brought a pump home from work, it's brand new. My company got it from government surplus for a project, but we went another direction and they didn't need it. I can't find a ton of info on it, and I don't have a ton of hydraulic experience so I'm not sure if it will work for what I want.

It's a POWER PACKER AU1540420 From what i can find its a AIR/MANUAL PUMP. 65 CU IN RESERVOIR. 4000-4200 PSI. The 2014 Price was $665.00.

I'm going to build a custom shop press, which will be used mainly as a press brake. I'm hoping for between 20-40ton and would prefer to be closer to 40 and not spend a ton of cash. Would I be better off selling this and getting a air/hydraulic jack or is there a certain hydraulic cylinder that will work with this and give me the tonnage I'm looking for? Most of the cylinders I'm finding setup for use in a press that are rated where I need are 10k psi cylinders. What's it worth and what would it be used for if I listed it for sale?

~80,000lb = 3000psi x 27 sq in

A 6" dia cylinder will give you 28 sq inches.

So it looks to me like you need a 6" or so cylinder to achieve your 40T force. You have many 3000 psi cylinders to choose from.

I don't think that pump is from a press as it looks exactly like a pump to lift the cab on a cabover truck. While it might work for a press it'd take a while for it to press, cab tilt pumps are rather slow.

I believe it is for a cab tilt, I planned on using it for a press though if it would work.

I don't know anything about it, other than I want it! ;)

Shoot me a PM if you are interested, I might be looking to sell it, I have to figure out my press plan first.

It will work but once it gets under a good load it will slowdown on how rapidly it pumps, so it might take a little bit to do a press operation.

Any suggestions on what parts to use? Most cylinders I'm finding have a clevis on the end.

With out seeing the press design it's hard to lead you to the correct cylinder to get. What is guiding the press foot? Do you intend to use the ram of the cylinder directly? Or do you have a guided ram? Cylinders come in many different configurations, you have to spec what you want for your needs.

Wouldn't he need about a 6" diameter ram to get 40 ton nominal force? This is assuming 3000 psi working pressure? Just a thought.

a 3" ram would be 1.5"^2*pi=7 in^2 (pi*rad^2) or about 10 tons force.

I don't mean to hijack your thread RalphXJ, but I was hoping Larry would explain to me his math on how he came up with the 3" diameter cylinder equalling 28 square inches. I had wrongly assumed you used pi * r^2 to find the area, but that obviously doesn't add up. I'm hoping you can teach me the proper math so I can figure this stuff out for my own press build. Thanks!

I will stand corrected on the figuring the area of a cylinder, I just poked the numbers into a online calculator and obviously was wrong. Yes 6" dia is correct, not 3"dia. I will correct the post above.

6in cylinder really jumps the price up!! Looks like I will selling this and doing a traditional jack!
