I am planning a new build. First building will be a shop and small apartment. Down the road I would like to build a house and heat it with hydronics from the boiler that heats the shop and apartment. Is this doable if the buildings are not too far apart? Will I have massive heat loss from the underground pipe to the next building? Is this a bad idea? If so any sugestions?

How far apart are the buildings going to be? Outdoor furnaces are usually placed some distance from the buildings being heated and don't appear to lose appreciable amounts of heat. I would suggest you check with a supplier of these furnaces to see what kind of insulation they use on the transfer tubing.

The locaton of the boiler is going to be on the far side of the shop from where the house will be. So the water will have to travel 24' across the shop and then probably 10 more feet untill it enters the house.

I have a 275 ft run from my 40x80 shop to my house with a 20 ft elevation change between both. You need insulated pex and a good pump or in my case two pumps due to the disance and elevation change. I think on the coldest day I averaged a 5-7 degree temp drop between both buildings. But, I also have a water line with the heat lines for my shop coming from the house. I know everybody on here will recommend internet suppliers. I would talk to the local supply house and hire someone that is familier with hydronic heat systems plus plan for the future with your boiler size .
