I am in flooring hell . . . Help me design

The weather has finally come around and warmed out here in the North Pole. So I figured it was time to lay down the flooring while the weather stayed warm.

Back in the day I had bought about 25 cases of 2' x 2' G floor squares for a smokin price at Costco.

I did not think I would need all of the cases, so I sold a few of the white cases to a friend.

Now fast forward 6 months later, I realize that I gave him too many of the white cases, and have a lot more black cases. Which now hinders my flooring design plans. As each box only contains 10 of these 2' x 2' squares.

Below are some of the random designs I just quickly laid out as it was getting late and cold. :(

There was a GJ member who had some amazing art skills and could design random patterns for the floor. I can not find this members postings or thread!

So I come to my fellow GJ members for guidance and suggestions as to what patterns would look right.

The garage is 20 wide x 24 deep. I have only two cases of the white tiles, which is twenty tiles in total . . . To work with, and right now I am on the edge of either cutting them in four, or in a diagonal shape to add some definition to the floor.

The original design this morning had just a simple white line running threw the center of the floor, I didn't take a picture but I am sure all of you know what that would look like.

Need some help, suggestions, and perhaps that elusive GJ member will provide me with a photoshop of some patterns that I could use!

Costco does have them on sale again this month.

Otherwise I think I like the last couple of designs the best. I don't know if your car has racing stripes but I'm thinking of mimicking the stripes on my Stang in the floor design. I'm using three colors but here's what I'm thinking...

BTW: I love your avatar! What's it from?

I like the design in the 21:34 pic the best. Keep it simple and symmetrical IMO

I like the last pic w/ the square. I would make it one row wider, then buy one case of red or gray and put the center 9 squares (gray - red). Then you would have a sqaure of white, then inside one row black, center (red or gray). Could leave the square like it is and just make the center gray.

Didn't know this would be so hard to just lay down some plastic flooring! :(
Here are a few more random patterns I just did to see what else could be done. The real problem is the lack of white tiles and each time I figure out a nice pattern I come up short in white!

Costco doesn't carry this style of G floor at my local stores, and on line its not the same brand or size either . . .

If anyone else has any other idea's please do chime in. And if you have a preference please do add it in. I appreciate the members who showed a preference in one or the other.

I dunno . . . You know when you see something it looks right! But, to me none of them look quite right, they simply look OK. :(

I don't know if I have the stomach to cut the white tiles into smaller pieces to be honest, because if I do, its do or die and can't turn back.

Now, if I needed some fracken black in there I still have 4 more cases = 40 tiles left as spares! :(

Chime in on this next set . . .

This is the simple line I stated earlier . . .

This isn't like brain surgery, but given the restraints of colors on hand its proving a lot more difficult to finalize anything . . .

In a smaller area, even in a larger area, you don't want it too busy looking, so go with the rectangle, I, or 21:34, avoid a lot of odd shapes that make it look like an old space invaders screen shot.

Bad idea? That's a good idea! Space Invaders would be freakin' AWESOME. Put an alien in the center of your garage. Perhaps the logo from the movie "District 9"? Or how about your initials?

A few years back my wife & I went to Paris, while there I noticed a lot of odd "space invader" like icons on the sides of buildings. Wondered what they were, but forgot about them til this thread. A little google reveals that they're an "art project" (aka "graffiti").

Pretty neat seeing them, maybe on a garage floor would be okay after all.

I would take a handfull of quarters the same number as white squares, toss them in the air and put a white square wherever a quarter lands.

Enough to make an X?
Or highlight where certain items will be (standing areas for your benches, etc.)

Create a walkpath for entry?

Didn't realize you lived up here. I will probably make it up to your end of the woods this summer, will swing by and say hi if I have time.

Do you have enough white tiles to make the first letter of your last name in the middle? Just a thought.
Also, thinking one white tile on each side of the garage door at the entrance then coming toward each other with each subsequent row - coming to a point further in. Kinda like an arrow into the garage?

I would make checker border along the walls or as a checker border near the garage door entry (for the first few rows only...9 tiles across would be 4/5/4/5 -- you could have four rows of checker and the rest black or put the other 2 white over by the door to the inside or something). I think trying to do a design will look goofy with tiles that big. You probably have enough to do a checker border just about around the whole place and it would look decent. As long as it ends up symmetrical I think you'll be good.

I appreciate everyones feed-back and input. I decided to follow everyone suggestion and just keep it simple for now.

I guess that's the beauty of having a tile floor you can always change it up to a different look in the future.

I will post up the final pictures one's the smaller pieces get cut . . . I almost fell off my chair when I saw that space invader theme! :lol_hitti

I would have given anything to do something like a district 9 logo, or similar style. As I said before the major problem is not having enough white tiles to make a decent design.

Maybe this summer I will see some more on sale at Costco, or where ever and commit a days doing another lay out.

Pictures coming soon, to a city near you . . .

Just realized Rocker already had that idear. Here's what his other suggestions would look like. :)

Here's an idear...

The border idea looks great! The problem is that the garage isn't even across all the different walls!

Something that is suppose to be so easy, turned out to be very time consuming and frustrating . . . :(

A lot of the examples you provided were considered before . . . :) But, it came down to the simple fact that too many tiles would need to be cut to accommodate the floor pattern.

If I can find some tiles for cheap this summer I will try some of the alternate patterns. Right now, I can't take a chance and screw up cutting any of the white one's and be stuck with a pattern I just hate . . .

Thanks for the samples, I will save them to my desktop for future considerations!

Hey, thanks a lot! They actually don't look too bad - I'd probably go for the four row one of the straight up border. The L shaped border doesn't look bad either though.
