I am looking for a fabrication idea:

I will have an attached 4 car tandem garage.

During the winter, I want to separate, the front half of the garage from the back half - essentially, sort of like having a "garage within a garage."

This would allow me to keep the cold out as I work on winter projects since I will be living on the Canadian border.

Ideas?, Roll down door/barrier?

Yes I would say a roll-up would take up
less space, unless you have the money
for one of those fancy doors that slide
side to side on a track.

The easiest thing that also allows the most flexibility in the future is to hang some of those thick plastic freezer curtains.

I built a 10x20 in my barn with some simple 2x4s screwed together and white tarps clamped to the frame. Was able to heat it with a 5000w heater.

The cheapest would be a sliding door if you build the door. That's basically what I have, a 70 x 38 building with 28' at one end as the heated area. The sliding door is much tighter than any roll up or overhead I've had. You do lose wall, space but mine slides to the left on the outside of the heated space over the walk in so it really only wastes about 5'. The door is made from 2x4 and 3/8 plywood on each side and insulated with 1 1/2 " Styrofoam.

A place I worked at had a type of sliding divider wall that compressed or folded up like the type of stuff that covers milling machine ways. It was on an over head track and was stored in about 6' of wall and would open up to about 30'. I believe it would provide some insulating properties also.

Ayuh,..... I'd think the cheapest way is to run a wire/ string/ rope across the garage, 'n hang a sheet of poly from it,....

We section off warehouses in such a way quite often,....

Look into agricultural curtains. Basically tarps with a rod at the bottom. When you pull the rope, the rod rolls up as it lifts so you have a neat roll at the ceiling.
