Blacksheepspeedshop: There is a thread on here one of the members did a great job of walking thru a vise rebuild.

It got me so excited i ran out and bought a used one, im gonna tear it down and re-paint it.

Well thats just it, all I can say is general shop use. I do constuction, motorcycles, cars and plane work. I have a cheap Northern Tool vise and it seems to do the job but I am guessing just like everything else you get what you pay for.

It's tough to find a one-size-fits-all-jobs vise for general shop use.

That's why I have a large one and a small one.

(And a whole bunch of in-between ones too)

You would be wise to shop around for a good used vice. You will likely get better quality for less money. I own 4 Record bench vices and 1 woodworking vice and find them to be very good. I paid $80 for an 8" vice in good working condition. It's the largest one in the picture below. I'll be stripping 3 of these down and rebuiding them. They all work well but could could use some freshening up and a coat of paint. I purchased new jaws for each one for about $30-$35 per set.
