I built a wind chime that doesn't work!

As crazy as it sounds the wind chime that I built doesn't work. I took my time, and cut the tubes to the correct lengths and they sound great when hit, wherein lies the problem. When the breeze blows the whole assembly sways and the "hammer" never touches the tubes. I have tried different positions of both the hammer and the wind catcher at the bottom to no avail.
Has anyone successfully made a wind chime that could explain to me where I went wrong?

You are now a millionaire...

The perfect wind chime...it doesn't make a damn sound..that is perfect!

We have some friends that have a neighbor with about 10 chimes...can't even have a conversation in their back yard they are so loud...

I will get him to buy a bunch of yours...give them to his neighbor...problem solved...silence...

Just hang it over a door so the door hits the wind catcher when someone comes in or out.

I'd say a bigger wind catcher should do it and hang the catcher from 2 lines so it doesn't just spin in the wind.

With all the input on having developed the "perfect" wind chime I think I may have to try selling them!
Here is the noisy version:

My mother in law is blind. The front of her house has a porch running the entire length.

Every couple feet is a wind chime.

It's annoying as heck.

Too high tech. We bought one a long time ago and it is just bamboo tubes. No hammer; the tubes just bang into each other when the wind blows. Works fine. It makes a pretty, mellow sound.

We have a wind chime on our front porch. It only works when the wind is blowing pretty hard. Whenever I hear it at night, it usually means there is a storm coming and the wind has picked up quite a bit. Or, it could mean the damn squirrels are trying to hide nuts on top of it again.

The wind catcher that pulls the hammer as you call it is to heavy.

Cell phones annoy me 20 fold over some wind chimes ....

if you didn't get the idea how to make copper wind chimes. check out this
Hello. What are some tips and techniques for making copper wind chimes at home? I'm interested in creating my own wind chimes using copper pipes, but I'm not sure where to start. What types of tools and materials do I need, and how do I go about designing and assembling the chimes to create the desired sound and aesthetic?

Your "clapper" (the disc that hits the chimes) has to be heavy enough to pop the chimes and close enough so where they don't have to travel more than, say, a quarter inch to the gongs... with a paddle (the thing that pushes the clapper into the gongs) big and wind catchy enough to push it into the gongs.

I had to move my wind chimes so they'd be quieter, now if they make noise I grab my phone to see if a storm is rolling in. :p

I'm glad you mentioned tuning the chimes.

I don't mind wind chimes in moderation, but not one in a hundred is tuned. As a former pro musician, un-tuned wind chimes drive me absolutely bonkers. It's physically painful, like a constant nails on a chalk board, and I absolutely have to get away from them fast.
