unless that 20% can be taken off an already on sale jack you arn't getting a deal. and no you won't be able to stack it with another 20%.

Basically, every Sunday newspaper has at least one HF 20% off coupon in it. If the store feels they are being generous, they are just offering you the coupon discount that everybody else has.

Check out their sale flyers and see where they may offer 40-50% off on a jack. If you plan on shopping there more often, consider the InsideTrack Club. Their fliers have good deals far better than 20% off.

Current sale flyer has the 1.5 ton aluminum jack at $59, down from $99 (40% off). 2 ton aluminum is $129 (from $199, 35% off). 3 ton is $69, down from $99 (30% off).

General 20% coupon says it does not stack... and excludes floor jacks anyway.

Just happened to be on my floor.

There is a posting on this forum under the General Garage Discussion, on HF coupons. You may be able to find a coupon there.

I'd get the 1.5 or the 2 ton rapid pump racing aluminum jack. I have a Craftsman model rapid pump and it's a great tool to have. Except, I'm on my second and as a Craftsman product it's pretty poor quality. My Craftsman jacks develop pumping issues when they hit the weight if stored anyway but flat. The first one quit just before the warranty expired. The current one is about 4 years old now but is developing issues. When I replace this one, I'll buy from HF because it can't be any worse and may well work better. Just verify the jack lift height for the model you chose as there is a review that says the specs on one jack are in error. Bottom line - they are lighter, easy to move and that pump-pump-lift saves time. It's a nice feature, worth paying a few $ for.

I have a couple of the HF jacks and they are junk. Look heavy duty enough, these are the 3 ton orange jacks.

First one did probably 10 or so cars up and then down. Second one did only 3 or 4 before it started leaking internally.

They will take the car up fine, but if you leave it on the jack it will leak internally and the car will come down on its own. The first jack actually started leaking some externally as well.

I ended up going to Costco, nice jack for $70 bucks on sale. Best damn $70 bucks I've ever spent!

Stay away from HF Jacks.

Just my two cents!!

One other thing, HF will only warranty one jack before telling you no more. If you buy the extended warranty they will do more. So, if you do buy the HF jack you would be good to also buy the extended warranty.

^ Good info there. LOL - I have an orange HF jack that I paid like $40 for in 1998. It still works good and some days better than the $180 Craftsman. Go figure.

I have one of the orange ones, the problem I have is that the gears that close/open the valve don't mesh well. More than once I've gotten it stuck under a car and had to get a big screwdriver to pry at the gear to turn it and lower the jack.

At the risk of sounding like one of the SO snobs...forget the new jacks, save your money, look around, and buy a good quality used American jack. It will cost less, give more lift, likely last longer, and when it finally does need service you are almost guaranteed to find parts. Plus, you will have a tool you can be proud of that is aesthetically pleasing and could likely resale for close to what you paid for it, and not just another like so many others.

If a jack is leaking down, its time for a rebuild. I used to have to test them yearly when I was still in the military, which involved placing them at max rated load overnight and measuring the drop in the morning. For the 5 tonners we had the standard was something like 1/2" in 12 hours max allowable drop.

Costco in Columbia had an Arcan jack last Sunday. Can't say it was the same, but it was low-profile. Maybe call first before making a dedicated trip?

Re: HF Jacks!

This is what I was considering, because of the weight. That 1.5 Ton model would only be good for lower-profile cars. The 2 Ton is expensive for what I want to spend right now even with a 20% discount.

Do you mean that Arcan jack from Costco? I don't think they are available in MD.

Yes, its the Arcan jack. I couldn't remember the name when I posted. Its red with a black rubber pad for the lifting area. Goes real low and also high enough to get the SUV's off the ground as well.

So let me ask you this, if you jack a car up because you want to rotate the tires from one side to the other, are you going to put stands under it?

I do this stuff for a living, if I'm not going to go under it I don't want to hassle with putting the damn stands under it. Period!

Any Jack that is any good should hold a car up long enough to do basic things to it. Doesn't matter who makes the jack!

This isn't no Sunday play day at the park, I'm trying to make some money.

That's what jacks do. Have you seen this thread:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120575

They should make people sign a waiver when a jack is sold without jackstands.

That idiot most likely had the jack in a stupid spot and it slipped out. I really don't think it came down slowly. You are right he should have had stands under it before going under it himself.

I know what the hell I'm doing, and I also know what any jack should be capable of doing.

Next time get the facts before you start flaming others!
