I'm posting up some pics of my dads garage as a kind of therapy. He's dying of stomach cancer and I don't think he's going to make it through the weekend. I'm not looking for a huge outpouring of sympathy here, I just thought it would help to talk about the garage he loved and the John deer stuff he so enjoyed.

My sincere condolences; It's not easy dealing with such a deadly disease. It's a very nice garage and I hope you will take care of his "treasures". In the end it all comes down to good memories and relationships -- for all of us.

Good luck, and God bless!!

Your dad has a cool shop. He should be proud of it. I'm watching my mom go through leukemia. It's rough to watch your parents in pain and you can't "fix" it. Hang strong with your dad and hold him tight.

I am both a certified auctioneer and estate specialist. Death is never easy to deal with. I often know the person who passed away and it is hard for me sometimes on the auction block to sell some of their memories. While I am somewhat hardened to it, having done it for many years, it can still be tough.

It looks like your dad has a great collection. Take your time when going through it all. Your dad had a plan in mind when he set things just a certain way on the shelf. Many of the items are "collector items" and have value.

We'll be here when you are ready to share some more.

My dad didn't get to build his garage until he was in his early sixties and getting ready to retire. He enjoyed it so much and it is a shame that he didn't get to enjoy it until so late in life. I feel so fortunate that I was able to start mine much sooner.

If you don't mind, could we see some pictures of his tractor collection? My father and brother are avid JD fans and probably have restored some 20 different tractors.

My dad only had one "antique" tractor and that was an old model L. He sold it a couple of years ago. He mainly bought old lawn tractors and fixed them up and sold them on the front lawn. He also serviced tractors for local people. The only collection he has now is his scale toy collection and his pile of parts tractors outside.

I am so sorry to hear about your father’s illness. We had a few john Deer's growing up. My dad had a 1940(?) 420-U and a 1994 790. I have the 790 in the backyard, but the 420 was give to a cousin when my dad was diagnosed with Cancer. I miss that damn 420 because it was so dang versatile.

When I built my shop, I took pictures of the process and made a calendar for my grandfather that year. It was while playing in his shop as a kid that I first determined that someday I would have my own shop. Due to health problems, he could no longer travel at that point to see it first-hand and it wasn't long after that that he passed on. That calendar was one of his most treasured items in his final year. He always kept it by his armchair and would flip through it and talk about how his grandson built this shop all by himself.

My heartfelt condolences on your father's condition. Spend what time you have together and make the days count. Sometimes things don't have to be said to be understood, but it is always better to speak from the heart when you have the chance than wish you had another chance later on... God bless.

Looks like your Dad spent some fun times out there, I'm going thru the same thing right now w/ Dad. He lives in the city & would have loved to have a shop like that for his hobbies.

Sorry to hear about your Dad... losing a parent is a hard thing :( , especially when you have to watch them go down physically. My prayers go out to him. You're fortunate though, I lost my Dad when I was 17 so I missed out on quite a few years with him (years that we could have done more things together). I'm hoping to build a '64 chevelle in the next few years because that was the only car I ever heard him talk about (I'll have to add garage space for that project :) ).

That's a great collection of JD's... please share more pics. I did see that he had a few of the L-series models (my personal favorite for some reason, maybe because they are pretty rare in my area). I currently have one L-series unstyled in my small (but growing) collection.

Well here's a funny little "dad story". My dad bought his model L after building his garage, and had it parked inside in front of the side garage door when he was showing a friend how easy it was to crank start. Well, as you might have guessed he didn't check if it was in gear, and it smashed through the garage door. :yikes:

Way Off...

"I come from garage people too!!" spent the better part of my younger years (before I went to college) doing stuff with my dad in workshop / garage. Don't know you guys but I'm very sorry to hear your father passed. Sounds like he was a great guy and that you guys had great times together.

My condolences.

Like I said, I wasn't looking for a large outpouring of sympathy here. Just to talk about some of the garage type stuff that he was interested in. But thanks.

As I said before, my dad bought old tractors and fixed them up to sell. He acquired a bunch of "parts" tractors and the yard started looking pretty shabby. So he bought a shed to store all his lawn and garden tools in and built a fence around it to hide all his parts tractors.

Godspeed Clarence........

Wayoff, unless it is my eyes, there appears to be a 111 in the boneyard - I've got one just like it that I got when my Dad passed - that little tractor is 21 years old this year!

Our fathers would have gotten along great - Dad's shop had that same "neat but just a little cluttered" look, I always loved being down there with him.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, my sympathies to you & your family.
From the looks of his yard & garage, he had his own private little oasis right there. Pretty neat. :)
