I posted a thread about anvils and there was several pages of feedback but the thread was deemed off topic by a moderator and he pointed out tools are to be discussed here on the Garage Journal.

I tried a search but obviously I haven't learned how the search feature works here,

I have a HEY BUDDEN anvil thst belonged to my granddad and was interested in hearing information about this one and others. HRP

Not enough information from you.
So far all we can guess is it's just an ordinary anvil that sells for scrap or triple.
We need pictures and numbers.
If you already had several pages of feedback, what additional info do you seek?
We're glad to help, but just not anything to help with....

Rewrite your initial post and 200 guys on here will be glad to answer your specific questions.

I had planned on reading the reply's when I got home from work but everything was deleted before I had a chance to view or read it.

I know little about the anvil other than the name and where it was made,I would like to know what to look for and where to look to establish the weight and hopefully when it was manufactured. HRP

Re: weight figurin - If no suitable scale available, use the Water displacement method to figure it's volume, then multiply cubic inches x weight of cast/ cube inch.

Accurate probably +- 2%. Marc

We can figure the weight from the photo. It's a standard anvil many here have and have already weighed.
Look for any other markings and post a picture of the top and any lines or cracks you see.

Tap it with the ball on a ball peen or drop a ball bearing or nut on it.
Tell us the noise it makes.

It's great that yours is a family thing.

Someone will be here shortly to post a guide of our best anvil threads.

It was always outside and I have owned and used it for at least 40 years yet never tried to clean it,

There is a lot of surface rust and I need to wire brush it,I don't feel good about sand blasting the anvil. HRP

Its sitting on a stool which means you lifted it up there! Wrap your arms around it and stand on your wife's bathroom scale. On second thought ALL wives say that scale is wrong!
Wire brush it, don't sandblast as it will take off the printing. Varnish it to keep it from rusting and set it in the house. Tell your wife its a Doorstop!

Essential Craftsman has a video on Hay Budden anvils, you could start there.

That Hay-Budden anvil is old and dangerous; better give it to me before someone gets hurt...:)

HRP: i've never logged on or seen HAMB, but i know there are a lot of HAMB members that also belong to GJ.

you were actually in the right section and maybe a SHOW YOUR ANVIL or Anvil search didn't show this thread, but here's the link:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33788&highlight=show+anvil

don't mind all the comments about it not being worth anything cause you might have a very valuable piece of iron not to mention a very nice piece of family history.

sometimes using GOOGLE for some searching works better and even though i've been a member for about 4 years now i maybe found this site for 5 or more years prior to that when searching old tools before i joined via my Googlfu.

cheers and welcome to GJ

Most of the time when I google something, I see threads/posts from Garage Journal that the GJ search feature doesn't even bring up. Always first page results.

Welcome to GJ, nice anvil! Try posting length, width and height, length of flat and horn separately and I'm sure someone on here has a rough idea.

Could you post pictures of the other side and base all 4 sides ? The edges are in rough shape if your not going to use it leave them just wire wheel and BLO or varnish it. If you want to use it unless you are a proficient welder you will need to have a pro rebuild the edges with weld. Then if he has access to a machine shop machine the top flat then you dress the edges how you want to.

I do believe I read that on the HAMB. You should find what you seek here.
As for search try GOOGLE - 'Anvil' but put 'Garage Journal' in the search title.

anvil site:garagejournal.com

the "site:" followed by the name of the site, restricts the google search to only results from...duh..that site. In the above, garagejournal.com.

Works for searching ANY site.

Speaking of anvils- story from my childhood.

Reminded me about a story about my uncle frank.

He was working at a shipyard in Philly and had his eye on an anvil- problem was that it was 200 lbs easy, and every day they filed in and out of the gate- so no way two of them could nick it!

So he starts getting a bad back...every day, mumbling and complaining to the guard at the gate, hobbling out at the end of his shift...all week long..."damn back acting up again"

Friday comes, he straps the anvil up to his crotch, tosses on his overcoat and hobbles on out the gate. "Wow that back sure looks like it's troubling you, Frank..."

My grandpa's brother. Grandpa died in 1976, he was 80. This was probably around 1920.
