I confess to tool abuse

Yep, and seeing this type of abuse is one of my pet peeves. I used a socket to drive something in place. I was hooking up a 3 ph bush hog to a tractor that had weathered lift arms and the bush hog pins were weathered too. Difficult to slide the hitch points together. In addition, the tractor has category II hitch arms and the cutter has category I hitch pins, so i use bushings to makeup the difference. They didn't slide together on one side so I used a 1 inch deep Craftsman(US made)to drive the bushing it. Just took a few taps and I used a rubber hammer so I hope the tool gods will forgive me.

I used that method with swingarm bushing/besrings in a off-road motorcycle one time.

Worked like a charm.

I don't know. I think you should have bought one of those 4 thousand dollar bushing driver kits and waited 3 weeks for delivery that you'd never use again before doing that.









BTW, if it wasn't for my 3/4" drive socket set, I'd barely have **** to use with my press.

I abuse the hell out of my tools sometimes. I have all craftsman tools and there's a Sears on my way home from work so I couldn't care less if I break them that just means I get a new one.

I wouldn't call it abuse if it's not stressing the tool beyond its limits or damaging it in any way.

Thats not abuse.... Now the other day when i used a HF flat head to chisel out a brick is another story.... gotta love the free **** they give you

I try to not abuse my tools but sometimes "in the field" you have little choice. Last time I can remember is when I was dealing with a stripped head on a 1/2 head bolt in a junkyard and hammered a 12mm Craftsman socket on there and managed to get it loose.

My thoughts is that they are my tools, If I drive some thing with a socket and it damages it. I will not take it back to get it replaced. It wasn't the company's fault that I used the tool for some thing it was not designed for.

You might appreciate this story told me by a friend. Many years ago, he was working thru the summer on a residential construction job as a lowly laborer, but he got to see stuff. One day the carpenter needed to open up a space in a stud for an electrical box. He used a hammer and a screwdriver to chip away the wood. Not too uncommon, I know, but later that same day, the carpenter needed to apply a stain to something. He went to his toolbox and selected a wood chisel to open the can of stain. SO he had all the right tools; just routinely used them for the wrong jobs.
