Listed an item for BIN $10.99 + shipping. Item was bid up to $11.50 before ending 15 mins later.

Seriously? I know it's only $0.51, but why not just use BIN?

You had more than one bidder and the first bidder may not have been the winning bidder and they hoped to get it for less than your BIN price. At least you got more than the BIN price. It's how the game works.

He was the last bidder, and knowingly typed in $11.50. Why not just click "BIN" for $10.99?

Wait, I'm having a hard time following what he did. His winning bid was around 9:30, but he bid at 9:37 less than his winning bid and the auction ended at 9:45 after a few people sniped @ $11. Well, whatever, I don't care, more than what I paid for it brand new so whatever.

From ebay:

Why did the Buy It Now option disappear after the first bid?
Buy It Now gives you the chance to purchase an item immediately, before bidding begins. But you have to act fast. Once someone bids, the Buy It Now option disappears. The listing then proceeds as a regular auction-style listing, with the item going to the highest bidder.

Special situations
In a listing with a Reserve Price, Buy It Now disappears as soon as the reserve price has been met.

In a few categories, the Buy It Now option may continue to be available after the first bid, but only for a limited time. Learn more.

and from the "learn more":

Update to Category and Price thresholds
The following categories will have Longer Lasting BIN w.e.f 10/17/2007 with a price threshold of 50%.

1. Parts & Accessories (eBay Motors)
2. Tickets
3. Clothing, Shoes & Accessories
4. Cell Phones & PDAs

Price Threshold: 50%
i.e. The BIN option will be available on an item till the current bid reaches or exceeds 50% of the BIN price.

Note: For reserve price auctions, the Buy it Now option will continue to be available till the reserve price is met. The price threshold is only applicable once the reserve has been met or exceeded.

Home and Garden, Screwdrivers I believe, no reserve was set. So it looks like it should have disappeared after the first bid, but didn't. Hmm, interesting, thanks for posting the ebay info.

Sounds like he gambled and bid more than the BIN hoping that he could score it for less than the BIN. Remember auctions end just slightly higher than the 2nd highest bidder is willing to pay and usually doesn't reflect the most a single person is willing to pay.

At that level of bidding, bids are in .50 increments. So if he got it for 11.50, then someone had to bid 11.00 which was more than the BIN (assuming the BIN was still showing)..........so why would someone intentionally bid 11.00 when a BIN of 10.99 was available?

strange.

I'm guessing the BIN fell off somewhere along the way.

I've never actually bought or sold anything on ebay. So a viewpoint from a complete newb - maybe he thought it was BIN unless the bids went over the BIN price and he really wanted it? In a way, the BIN price was thought of as the reserve price and once it went over that you had to bid to win. If that's the only one you're selling then there won't be another chance.
Does that make sense - again - a complete newb here and maybe he was also.
