I feel surrounded by tools!!!

Guess what i got??? A Craftsman 302 pc mechanics set for $180!!! (i got a $20 gift card if u spent over $100 so it came out to 180 technically). It came with the thin profile ratchets, a total of almost 30 combo wrenches, 20 ignitions wrenches, 180ish sockets, 40 hex keys, etc. etc. etc. I'm in love I dread tomorrow night when i have to put em all in my toolbox. i have a feeling i won't have enough room/it's going to take a long time/i'll have to go to HF to get some more socket rails. I feel like it's x-mas day, i'm happier than you can believe. The chrome is pretty decent, can't expect any better for what i paid. No laser etching, the set was made in july 08. That's why it was cheap and on closeout. Sale ends tomorrow if anyone wants to get the set. You have to ask for them to go get it, there's no security wrapping so they keep them in the warehouse. My mom and dad only spent $15 plus $10 of tax so i didn't get to work out as good of a deal as i liked but i feel proud i bought pretty much 100% of it.

I only have a $25 HF socket set. everything else i bought didn't come with the c-man set so i now have an "on the road" set.

Nice... Dont let anyone badmouth your Craftsman set. I completed 2 frame off Resto's a 79 and a 87 Chevy in the Rust belt of all places using the Smaller Set similar to yours. Of course i wasnt wanting to sleep with my chrome sockets nor did i care if they was scratched etc...

I bought a similar Craftsman tool set when I was 16 and exclusively used it for several years. Now 12 years later I'm just replacing the tools with "better" brands because my tool nerdiness has increased significantly.

It's a great tool set and just about the best bang for the buck you can get.

I've been looking over the set details and the only thing I notice is that you'll probably need more extensions. I have some HF ones that I think are decent for the price. Also, I went to HF today and looked at the fancier extensions that got a good review here on GJ, they looked pretty nice.

The only thing I don't understand about these sets is whey they have so many 12-point sockets. My set is the same way. Except for 12-point fasteners, I really don't see a use for 21-point sockets.

I have a baseball game tomorrow morning even tho with the rain we got, the whole tourney will prolly be cancelled. But it took an hour and a half to organize them on my carpet, then it was 10:00 and i didn't want to take another hour to put them in my box and i wanted the whole world to know what i got i only organized them on my carpet because i wanted to make sure everything was there because the box was beat up because it's been sitting in the warehouse for 2 years.

OP: Congrats on the new tool acquisition. I don't care what anyone else says but be assured you will be very pleased with these tools for years to come.

Only 15, imagine in another 10-15 years when you start your own family and your boy / girl starts using those tools you bought today.

It will make you think back to this thread (get them signed up then) so they can see how crazy you were now, and then!

sweet that the good ratchets were in there. They're my current goto ratchet in 1/4 & 3/8 - 1/2 feels too heavy unless i'm really going to be reefing on it...

Good purchase, that should really help fill up that box up. As for the Craftsman haters, just ignore them. While some of their tools are not my favorite, the sockets still work for me on a daily basis. In fact just used a few of them today checking some valve clearances on my Lexus.

loud is easily fixed. next time you're at HF, get a tube of the super lube.

pop open the ratchet (careful not to booger up the gasket on the plate) and give it a little squirt of the super lube. you can disassemble and use some brake cleaner to clean it all up first if you want (remove the gaskets first since they'll get eaten by the BC).

"red lube of love" (search for it if you don't know what it is) is good for 20-30 tooth-ish ratchets. 60+ teeth need something less viscous and super lube works great for this.

1/2 does feel kinda heavy and loud. but it's the best 1/2 i got for now

Me too. 30* yrs on my 1/2 and 3/8" set. I rebuilt the 3/8 once with a warranty kit after I abused it , other than that they're still going strong.

I use bearing grease on my standard craftsmans. I also mod them so they take no effort to ratchet. I bet the 3/8" is smoother than a newer snap on. It sure is better than my grandpa's older snapons, those things have the stiffest action i've ever seen.

I did notice they look the same to open up as a c-man raised panel, so i think i might go ahead and do that. I think i'll just leave the 3/8 and 1/4 along tho

X2 on lubing the ratchets. I use plain old clean grease and it works pretty well. Also you shouldn't have any problem fitting the tools in your box if you use socket rails, wrench racks, etc.

I often wish they would build a set using nothing but 6 point sockets 1/4 3/8 1/2 and put the pro wrenches and screwdrivers in it. Have everything go up to 1 inch and down to 1/4 inch in shallow and deep. Then dont overlap the sizes by much (no need for a 7/8 socket in 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive) keep out the fillers like 40 allen wrenches and 20 nutdriver bits and 20 srewdriver bits, 12 point sockets and add a set of allen head sockets and a few more extentions. The peice count would be lower and the price higher but people arnt as stupid as they think. I think it would be a nice set

Hahaaa Yeah, I worked in London for 3 weeks last year, I was on the Tube ONCE at rush hour. I staggered my work hours so I wouldn't have to experience that mess again!
