I found more than three Snap-on tools in the last month. No name, no license #, no nothing. Some people ask about marking tools; I personally mark mine with license # and last name(I have tweeker neighbors). What am I supposed to do? Give it to the police? Ya right, they would put it right in their box. Finders keepers, people who lose their tools without marking them weepers.

Don't put your DL number on them, makes it too easy for someone to steal your identity. Mark them with something unique (and all tools with the same thing) that way if the cops find them they know they're yours.

The biggest item I see stolen is bikes. Those are easy, people just need to right the serial numbers somewhere and not lose them. Something like a bday would work. The conversations would go like this:

You: "All my tools have 3-14-75 etched on them."
Cop: "Why's that?"
You: "Its my birthday."
Cop: "Good idea."

Cop: "Why do all your tools say 3-14-75?"
Bad guy: "Uhhh, I thought it would look cool?"
Cop: "What really makes you look cool is turing around, so I can put cuffs on you."

Around here finding stuff and not turning it in counts as a form of theft. In Oregon you turn it into the local police, get a case number, and if its unclaimed in a month you can go pick it up as your own.

2 years ago this coming July a group broke in the job where I was working and stole all of my ceramic tile, carpet installation tools, and supplies to install the flooring. I called the police, they came, made a report, and gave me the name of a detective I could contact. He asked if I had any markings on the tools so I could identify them. I said yes my name was ingraved in all them, some of them where 25 years old and they don't make them like that anymore. End of story..........the cops do not do anything to try to get your stuff back, they do not care if you get tools back. One of the reasons I know, and there are several, every cop asked "you've got insurance don't you". I did not! Marking tools does not help if they are pawned in a different location.

i know this too well few years ago, i drove my 58 chev custom too work , i just got done with the tuck and roll white int with buckets, but i need the center consol, so i put my craftsman toolbox in the middle between the seats, now these tools were highly polished , thats the way i keep my tools nice and clean and bright, all craftsman, box and all , full set, about $567 at that time, anyway after work i was gonna get that consol, but look down and the tools were gone , then looked up seen the busted right window, i had a towel over the box , but didnt help, called police they came, took report, then two months called found my tools he said are these yours i open the box , yup, well we cant take your word, has too go too court, i showed him my dl and everything ,no matter, there was my tools on floor in front me, but wouldnt give them too, so i press charges against the kid who broke my window and went too court only too lose my tools , becuse of no id on them, i then gave the judge all my craftsman recpts too no avail, so state got free tools:argue:
