Yep, MG725 cranked up to 125psi with 1/2" line would have worked wonders...

I completely stopped reading responses after gawking at your avatar for 10 minutes...

I can assure you that bra is not an HF, because it's holding back much too much kinetic energy for a cheap import to withstand.

Strictly for research and development, I'd love to see a high-res picture of those...

Wow, that is some pretty impressive carnage.

I've been spoiled by a Torque Mesiter; torque multiplier (9:1) designed for use on aircooled VW flywheel/axle nuts. Dad realized the starter ring on a Saturn S-Series flywheel fit the gear on the Meister perfectly. To adapt it for axle nut removal he had a spare flywheel drilled for a 4x100 bolt pattern and modified a 30 mm socket (TIG welded a VW axle nut to it). Bolt it to the hub, put the socket on the axle nut, set up the tool and you can use a 3/8" ratchet to get the nut loose. It also makes torquing the axle nut a cinch!

Really. Those of you with awesome avitars (you KNOW who you are) really need to do the community a service by posting up some hi-res versions.

Yep, that was a real surprise.

Pretty sure that is his wife.

I think I would've broken out an oxy-act torch before tearing up all those tools. That and some Kroil. I have a 1" x 40"breaker bar for those occasions. In the fall I had one tight enough on my nephew's car that he had to get in it and hold the brakes.

Oh. Some cheap tools failed.

-This.

My reaction was "this is newsworthy?" :D HF bar broke. Gosh, who'da thunk? Craftsman bar broke? Well, with a 3 ft cheater bar on an application that clearly exceeds ti's capacity, why was that a surprise? Impact gun didn't do it? Again, homeowner grade impact, probably run by a "pancake" compressor and fed by a small-bore hose. Nut probably had 200 ft/lb at the factory, gun might do 160 ft/lb, again, no surprises here. Bent a 3/4 drive? Oh, bent a cheap-*** 3/4 drive. Again, where's the unexpected part? :D

Personally, I'd get out my old 60's era Ingersoll-Rand 1" drive impact. But then, I have tools and not toys. :D

Doc.

Now that everyone has finished spouting off, here is what I did not hear:

I did not hear from the HF guys who say that breaker is indestructible and all they need. Personally, mine scares me to death, it bends like a rear leaf spring.

I did not hear from the guys who insist 1/2" up to 36mm is all a person needs and 3/4" is a waste of money.

I did not hear from the Craftsman is good enough crowd.

Here is what I found interesting: That multiplier is a type I was unfamiliar with and can be bought for $50.

You will not need a $250 gun.
You will not need 1/2" hose with hi flow couplings.
You will not need a torch setup.

Seems you could spray it down with some Kroil, wait an hour and remove it with the multiplier without using one cussword. That's huge up here in the rust belt, and I have a hub bearing job on a '97 Suv in my future...

I'm kind of interested in a torque multiplier, seems like one would be real handy around tractors and heavy farm equipment...even with 1/2 and 3/4" impacts.

Kroil & and few raps with a ball peen, do that a couple of times over 24 hours, then a $75 with coupon 1/2" HF Earthquake gets it off in 10 seconds! - No drama required. :rolleyes2

or if you are in a hurry, torch + 1/2" HF Earthquake for immediate satisfaction!

if you are going to use a breaker bar, my 40" 3/4 inch bar is what you need!

This made me scratch my head too how it didn't break. We've all probably done it at some point and when it breaks it flies halfway across the garage.

That is all too familiar. I just went through that as some of you may remember reading. The 3/4 was what worked for me. It was a borrowed Craftsman set that finally got it loose.

Do a search under lug nut torque multiplier and the cheap one comes up on epay. Up north princess auto carries them. I guess the original is called the cheater wrench. They are actually designed to remove lug nuts off big rigs, but I'm liking it for the use shown.

Hmmm, 4 minutes a part on the reply.

We will never know, but I would be willing to bet good money that a 1/2" bar wouldn't have gotten that off no matter the brand. And yes, I have and use a snapon.... And a harborfreight, if it's relevant...
I've bounced up and down on the end of one of those tekton 3/4" bars. There's no way in hell my 1/2" snapon is any stronger.

A really powerful 1/2" impact probably would have done the job. My 1/2" earthquake continues to amaze me.....
Otherwise, maybe that $50 tool isn't such a bad deal for those occasions when a $12 breaker bar can't do it....

I think this is simply a case of just needing the right tool for the job, rather than fuel for a brand war....

Just had this very experience last week removing my own Honda axle nut.

Husky 1/2" didn't touch it, MAP gas didn't touch it, breaker bar w/ 2 extensions (around 6' total) didn't touch it (but didn't break! gotta love old Craftsmen).

Had a friend come over with an impact that's tested to 1400 ft lb breakaway, heated it for 5+ minutes with MAP gas, then rode the trigger until she spun.

I think I like your process better.
