I don't post very often, just read and vibe off of some cool ideas.
So anyway, I called my old snap on guy last week (not -seen or spoken in over 10yrs.) I needed some scewdrivers replaced, he goes-"Come on out to the house". Turns out he lives 5 miles away!. So i go, Get on the truck ,check out the cool stuff while he takes care of the screwdrivers- I say what's the fuss about the F80-You tell me, hands me a ratchet. Ok it's all over now!
But there is no way I'm paying $87.00 for this-it's still just a ratchet.
What to do?
...'Do you take trades"? Yes,so I traded a 3/8 936 that I got at a pawn shop for $17.00 He goes-Aw, just give me $40.00 . Ok, deal done!
When I get home and look at the ticket ,I sould have payd almost 50.00
This guy is the coolest snap on guy I'v ever met.-Been around for yrs.
On a side note- Met his son a few yrs. ago-Big Jerk!! I'm not taking this one to work (FH80). One of these days I'll post pics of my toolbox. Not that it's
anything special, I'm just a tool junkie!
Anyway, just thought I would share. Eric

Its a tool that begs to be used. I would have a hard time not taking it in just to show off once or twice.

If it's an FH80, then it would have the soft grip. How do you like the feel of the soft grip? I've never held one, so any info would be appreciated. :)

FH80 is nice, but the head is too thick. 0.50" compared to 0.36" for Gearwrench's thin-profile ratchet. That's 39% thicker. :D

BTW, Gearwrench 60-tooth ratchet feels as good as the 80 series in terms of ratcheting mechanism.

And in 5 years when it breaks, and gearwrench has moved onto another supplier, and you cant get a rebuild kit, then what? My snap-on dealer has rebuild kits on his truck for ratchets from the 1940's to current.

Thats true; Snapon is one of the few companies that really supports an amazing amount of their vintage tools! I guess the long history of supporting the professional mechanic is something they take seriously but it also keeps the cost of their warranty exchanges down too; that way they don't have to hand out new ratchets all the time.

At the price of the GearWrench (compared to Snap On) why repair when you can just trash it and get a new one...

Well, the only thing they still support is ratchets that are "new enough" that a kit made for 70's era ratchets still fits. Its just by chance that the design of the internals didnt change, and the parts still fit.

Then they just give you a new ratchet. Like the guys at Carquest told me when they switched from Blackhawk to Danaher stuff if you break any Blackhawk stuff bring it in and we will give you Carquest stuff.

Merkava_4,

Don't behave like a bully. Everyone can express their opinion. You do not need to feel offended whenever anyone say that they prefer other tools to Snap on.

BTW, I love Snap on, my tool collection is just more diversified than yours.
