So I got a call from a guy that I used to work with and he asked me if I was still interested in one of the lathes that he and his brother had in their mom and dad's garage. I listened to him as he told me about all the things he had to go with it. Then as I am waiting for him to drop the price on me he says "I know if you have it, it will get used and taken care of. So if you want it come and get it!!" HOLY ****!!! Here's some of what I got:

16 X 40 South Bend Lathe(tag says 7ft.bed)
2 steady rests
3 tool posts(2 old style loosen and turn, 1 Aloris style quick change)
6 jaw chuck
4 jaw chuck
2 face plates
coolant tank
boring bar holder(15 bars from 1.75 dia. to .375)
box of tool bits (HSS and Carbide)
chainfall and beam/trolly

other stuff I can't remember off top of my head...oh yah a small optical comparator.

I am so jealous.
What is the spindle bore on that thing? Looks quite a bit bigger than a heavy 10.

Oh, and you ****.

And that six-jaw chuck will give you a humbling lesson in patience.

Thanks guys for acknowledging my suckage...I can live with it !!!! As to first project...not sure yet..Spindle bore is not huge, maybe 1.5-1.75?? The six jaw is very nice, I've never had in issue with them as long as someone doesn't start messing with the set screws in the side.

You ****, you ****, you ****, you ****, you ****...

...sorry, I just lost out on a silent auction bid on a lathe by $25, and am still regretting my guesstimate of the value wasn't a tad higher. I'm jealous, to say the least...

Sounds like an adjust-tru chuck. By loosening the chuck mounting screws and ajusting the set screws with work held in the chuck, you can make the chuck run true. Don't forget to tighten the mounting screws again. :)

Lucky! I won't say you ****.... out loud.

That's a pretty decent sized lathe for a homeowner.. make sure you test it out and cut everything round and metal in sight.

Is money getting tight? Just dig up those old fence posts, turn it down into chips and sell it for scrap! :D

Woody,

That is a beautiful, large South Bend you just got for free. I have the little brother of it, Heavy 10". When you get it together and making chips, some photos would be great. And an adjust-tru chuck for it- worth several hundred alone. Those are really nice chucks. Enjoy it!!
