I hate having to use readers...

I wear bi-focal contact lenses, and have been very happy with them. I've worn contacts for over 35 years, and went to bi-focals some years back. My contacts cost me about $200 (including fittings) a year, about what you'd pay for a reasonably good pair of glasses.

Bonus: contacts don't steam up when coming in from the cold, rarely get dirty, never slip off your face. In all the years I've never lost a contact lens.

These things are the cat's meow for reading glasses!! Doesn't keep me from having allthe others scattered around the house, but this pair is always around my neck ready for use. And becuase they're short on your neck, they never get in the way!!

I agree with drmarkr that the glasses that magnetically attach in the front are great. I have a pair for work. I get the strangest reactions from people who haven't see them before though - "Are your glasses broken?" etc. I put 'em on when I get to work and usually don't take them off until I go home. A little pricey fo readers though.

I wore them until my last DL exam (72)
The lady at the counter said "Why don't you try it without your glasses?"
I passed and now can drive naked.
(I had noticed my sight seemed O without my glasses until I put them on. After that I needed them for the rest of the day.)
It turns out you get farsighted as you get older and I had outgrown my nearsightedness.

But small type is a killer.

I noticed a bottle of "over 50 vision vitamins" at the drug store and bought them on a whim.
They seem to be working.
So I am on my second bottle.

Hah ! sounds good.You nailed it here in your post - we tend to get more far-sighted as we get older ie + prescriprion lenses. If you start off nearsighted/shortsighted ie minus (-) prescription lenses then as you age you head to zero and then start to plus + lenses.

For close work , it is a HUGE advantage to be shortsighted. You see near things so much better ( ignoring astygmytism, that changes things usually)

I was slightly shortsighted (-), now more longsighted (+) as I have aged. Preferred shortsighted

I'd encourage anyone who starts to lose the close-up focus to see an eye doctor. It's probably presbyopia -- your lenses losing their flexibility.

A pair of OTC readers may help, but you could also have something else going on. That was my case, and prescription readers work much better for me than OTC. (slight astigmatism)

I'm not in eye doctor or anything, just offering a suggestion.

I have a pair of those, but my head is too big, so they pop open. Yes, they're adjusted to the max length.

The only time I need readers is welding. the lens kept getting smoked up and I couldn't figure out why until I noticed I was literally 4in from the arc to see. Some 2.0 readers and life is back to normal. Don't need them for anything else.

All my safety glasses have readers in them. My sun glasses have readers in them. Have them in the car, shop, and everywhere I read. It has become a way of life.
