This project has been dragging out for so long this summer, but finally seeing some movement in the last two weeks - foundation and beam! Just had to share some photos of the beam installed with people who will appreciate it, because wow, it really opens the space up and has me excited again for this project.

What kind of door is going to enclose that space? Do they make 26' wide overhead roller doors?

What are your plans for the space now that it is free of door limitations?
Curious to see the type of door you'll be putting in, and whether their is a R44 or R66 Helicopter also in your plans.

Hey guys, sorry to leave you hanging on what the plan is - I'm adding on to my existing attached garage! What was previously a side-entrance, 29' wide x 20' deep garage is having an additional 48' feet added on, converting it into a front-entrance 68' wide x ~28' deep garage. There will be a pair of 18' double doors on the street-facing part of the addition, leaving the original garage space as the workshop/lift area. Here's how the site sits currently, which shows the foundation for the addition:

And here's a very rough render to give an idea of how the addition will look added on to the side of the existing garage:

Floor plan for the addition:

I hope your engineer or architect oversized the beam enough to allow for a 1000lb point load trolley.
I am definitely missing having an overhead beam in my present shop.

Congrats! That's going to be awesome.
Thanks!

Oh man, no, but I'm really wishing I would have asked for it! I was thinking I was going to have to box it in with drywall for fire rating, but there's no living space above it so I don't actually think I have to. The beam is a W12-40, guess I need to find some load tables and see. I'd imagine that as long as I would only use it when there's no snow on the roof, I should be good!

So useful! I need to see if I can leave my beam uncovered and then see what load I can put on it.

Mine is hung from a total 12 trusses. I had them designEd for the load. My beam was located so that there is no point load and the fastening system spread the weight over the trusses.

Are you in an area that has twisters or hurricanes? I'd want to run numbers for the shear resistance.

Tornadoes, yes. An engineer calculated the necessary beam for my use, and I just took it at face value as being proper. The addition will have engineered trusses for the roof plan and they'll run parallel to the beam. So my plan is to slap an engineered truss up directly next to the end of the roof joists above the beam, which should increase the resistance to all potential deformation.

Sounds like you thought of everything. If you needed a shear wall the engineer would have addressed it.

The problem with big openings is that they can wind up looking like this....

Uh... YIKES! Thanks for the sleepless nights as I stress about yet another thing that can go wrong with this build! Hahaha
