I have had a 1957 Chevy BelAir 2dr. ht. I have had for over 40yrs. I have rebuilt it from top down. Now I am at the point where I'm looking for the rare hard to find accessories that were avalible back then. These guys that have these old parts are asking outragious prices for them. I know I don't "need" them but I always seem to rationalize spending the money for them. I get excited looking for them and waiting to get them but after they arrive I feel guilty because I know I shouldn't have spent that much money. Don't get me wrong it doesn't put me in a bind or any thing like that. It's just I know most people other than another 57 Chevy owner would not apprecieate how hard it is to find some of these parts are and really don't care. I'm obsessed with finding them. Am I the only car nut or are there other car guys out ther like me? It is kinda like chaseing the Maltese Falcon....

I prefer driving mine! When I hear accessories I think of that aisle in the parts store that has clear plastic floor mats and flamed-motif steering wheel covers (with matching chrome stick on flames for the outside).

The '57 needs no help being cool, keep it simple.

I feel your pain. I've spent alot of time trying to find the correct air filter housing, oil filter housing, horn, 3 on the tree transmission housing and countless other things for my willys. They may be simple machines, but back in the day there were so many changes in such a short period of time it's enough to make your head spin trying to figure out which changed peice fits your model year or production year jeep. And of course i'm referring to the early cj-2a's.

But in the end, it's whatever makes you happy. spend the time, spend the money... you'll have a sick ride you can be proud of. You can't take it with you when you go.

I'm an old car guy, hot rods, muscle cars, anything. Junk yards and swap meets are my playground. My 1st Vette had a 4 track (yes, i said 4 track) Lear tape player mounted in the glove compartment. I really like seeing those "off the wall" accessories. So many are reproduced now it kind of takes some of the "wow" factor away though.

Yup, I'm a chrome-aholic,

Like you, it's my guilty pleasure. And sometimes I've had a little remorse, even though I have the cash to spare.

I finally set myself a monthly budget. If something I want is more than that budget I hold off buying it and wait til my budget accumulates enough for the purchase. Believe it or not, I've come to enjoy that process and it's sort of made my purchases even more satisfying.

I went 55-57 Chevy crazy when I moved to South Carolina from upstate New York in '77.

The move from the land of rusted out junkers to almost rust free cars got me hooked. Leaving dirt track racing behind, I invested that previously wasted money on collector cars. Over the years I bought and sold probably close to 75-80 of these cars. Most of the good ones finding new owners in the rust belt states.

Along the way I bought a bunch of NOS parts and accessories, much of that I still have.

I switched gears here about 15+ years ago and transferred over to '48 and earlier Fords. Only old Chevy I have is my '55 Bel-Air 2-dr that I bought Oct '77. It was our honeymoon car and has been sitting in the shop corner since '85.

What rare pieces have you collected? I have a rare pair of NOS rear bumper guard that were required on '57s sold in the state of Vermont. Story goes that Vermont didn't like the single light bulb the '57's had to illuminate the license plate. Chevy took the standard rear guards and put lights in them, similar to '55-'56. This addition satisfied the state of Vermont lighting requirements. And, these aren't the short wagon guards.

The most expensive option I have for a '57 is a complete factory 283 hp fuelie unit, as removed from a running car, probably 40+ years ago. Includes the distributor, passcar air filter and fuel filter. Years ago I was going to build a 150 black widow, but a guy came around and wanted the car I was going to build real bad.

I still have a complete NOS front bumper. Another item I have, that I thought they'd never repop, are the Fenton dual outlet exhaust manifolds. A new pair is now about $300. Less than what I paid for my original pair back in '88!!!!! I saw the originals going for as much as $2,000+. That invest took a Wall Street noise dive!!

So, I share with what you're doing. I don't look at buying these parts as an obsession, I look at it more like an investment (Fenton manifolds excluded!!).

I bought all these within a 7-day period. I used to be happy with my Craftsman rollaway and Husky chest.

OP, you think you got it bad? I always wanted a 57 chevy but when it got here it is a station wagon! Yuck, mothers, grocery shopping, ya know? Not a mans car at all. worse yet it has 4 doors. I guess you gotta be careful what you want cuz you just might get it. Oh well, It was free and I drove it 25 miles home and now I've had it more than 25 years. The bad thing about it is that when I buy parts I have to pay convertible prices for every piece even though this is the least desirable model they made.

I have a bunch of the NOS ford accessories and many of the mustang specific ones. I love those things because they are quirky and cool and a glimpse into the gadgets that people wanted back then.
I have gotten most of them at swap meets and eBay
I am amazed by eBay. I see one of these go up for sale and there is a bidding war that takes it to $200. Then a week or so later another one will come up and I get it for $20

The long roof popularity has hit and wagons are COOL now. Fewer of them made and they've become more desirable as "stuff" haulers. Wish I had one. The only long roofs I had were Nomads. Can't afford one now.

Back in the early 80's i worked for a company who's owner had 17 57 Chevrolets. He had 2 guys that worked on his collector cars only. One of them Bill handled all the parts for these cars and bought tons of NOS parts for them. Bill in the late 70's went thru and bought all the parts inventory from over 300 chevy dealers in Pennsylvania. Most he bought at pennies on the dollar. Bill ended up with an incredible inventory of parts, tens of thousands of parts. I remember the inventory of NOS parts on shelving like a dealership, about 4,000 square feet of parts in a 20,000 s.f. building. I remember opening a big box and inside was over 100 stainless steel quarter panel inserts another had as many grill screens. Unfortunately everything was sold off in the late eighties. Oh, the stories i could tell. Today those parts would be worth millions.

I always wanted to go to the turkey rod run in Daytona [HUUUUGE swap meet] but so far haven't made it. The sad part is I'm only a couple hundred miles away.

still for sale just havent had time to deal with CL people so I havent updated it. here is a link to some photos http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2666

It's tough selling project cars today. There a glut of nice restored ones to choose from.

One hint on this car. Put the door latches in it so ya' can toss the bungee straps. And get those goof ball rear wheels and tires off. That stance isn't doing you any marketing favors. Stock old wheels that fit in the hole will do more for ya'. Don't know what your price is or what parts come with it. Can't tell if it was a Bel-Air, 210 or 150. All the molding holes are closed up. Trunk looks solid around the wheel wells. Can't see the tail pan.

I am always "modding" or modifying my late model Mustang.
With me, the aftermarket parts available are just crazy.
Weeding out what I think looks good on my ride is a constant challenge...I buy what I like when I can afford to but also feel a little goofy when I know my car is worth more than the blue book value.
Then, I sit in the garage sippin on a brew and admire my handy work...it becomes all worth it.

I can certainly understand your problem (wouldn't actually call it a 'problem', though...) I just purchased an older ('81) vehicle, and although not a 'classic' like yours, I'm still interested in fixing it up the way I want to. I'll need wheels, sound system, interior upgrades, just to name a few. Also need to be on the lookout for spare parts. Lots more parts out there for '57 Chevies than for what I have......

I feel your pain also, although mine is for 55 Chevs. I have a set of NOS fenders in my attic for the elusive convert, or Nomad. The hunt is what makes it so much fun. I have had my 2 dr sedan for like 15 yrs, have always had a 55 since age 16, 39 now.
