My son and I did the weekend thing in Kansas City and I finally was able to pay a visit to Epsteins. All I can say is WOW! They have an unreal amount of merchandise stuffed into that place! Lots and lots of great stuff there, prices are pretty good considering the quality you get, and has that great "hometown" feel from places I remember as a kid.
Picked up a box full of odds and ends to add to the inventory. Several things you likely wouldn't find anyplace else.
Definately a must see if you get to KC.

I guess I'd call it "old" smell. Maybe a bit of dusty and musty also.
The floor is old t&g wood laid diagonally and appears to have no hint of a finish, at least not anymore. Merchandise is displayed on simple wood shelves, many things are in case boxes with the top ripped open. You will see numbers written on the front of the box in pen or sharpie, or sometimes a tag tacked to the front of the shelf. The number will be something like E5721 which means the price is $12.75. The shelves are very close together, a 300 pounder may be a bit uncomfortable moving up and down the "aisles". Staff is friendly, helpful and amazingly, they know where to find things in what appears to be total chaos.
As noted on the receipt, I paid cash, and the clerk reached in his pocket to make change.
I imagine I'll stop in again sometime.

I guess you can get by with that when your city is a "destination".
Here in Nebraska, we have 5.5% state sales tax, and most decent sized towns have 1.5% on top of that, and Lincoln and Omaha add 2% on restaurants, hotels, etc to fund tourism (not sure what you do to fund it, do you pay people to come?)
On top of that we have state income tax, and obscenely high property tax.

When we go to KC, I'm always struck by how many Nebraska license plates I see there. I guess its good if you can get visitors to pay most of the freight for your town. Lincoln can only do that on seven Saturdays per year.
