I have* ONE Snap On socket..

.. apart from an old set of BA/BS/W (that I was given for free) & that one socket is a 15mm 6 point shallow impact 3/8 drive for Chevy drain pans.

Just went to change the oil on my S10 & the ******* thing shattered like glass when I pushed on the ratchet.

& no, I wasn't pushing the wrong direction.

But anyways, why would you specify an impact socket for a ron plug? I mean you know a 1/4 ratchet will get it tight enough, right?

Off subject but a friend of mine broke a weird 12 point looking Snap on socket and I told him give it to me and ill take care of it. Sense the snap on guy comes every friday. Well turned out to be a 90 dollar socket. dont know how much he liked the fact he had to warranty that.

when this happens to me its usually one of the animals that work with me have been in my box and pushed the tool past all reasonable limits, so I pick it up and it crumbles in my hand
I hide their stuff whenever I get a chance ;-)

And as for it breaking, it happens. Rolls Royce cars do break down on an occasion, and Snap On tools will fail on an occasion as well.

I wasn't given it, I bought it off the truck when I bought my S10 9 years ago. It's only ever been used by me for that one drain plug


BA/BS/W. It's what is used on RR Merlin & Griffon engines & BSA motorcycles etc

BA/BS/W stands for British Association/ British Standard/Whitworth ....sizes you use when your Rolls Royce breaks down.

Because it was the only 15mm 6 pointer they had on the truck the day I needed/bought it.. & I wasn't trying to tighten it. I also have a calibrated elbow. Cam memcard awol

Only other person to touch it was the SO guy 9 years ago as he handed it to me. Since then it's been used once or twice a year so the ******* POS lasted less than 20 uses...

Thinking back, I don't think I have ever broken an impact socket. And I routinely put 3/8 impact sockets on the end of my MG725 with an adapter.

Hey, I once used a brand spankin new Craftsman 3/4 Saltus wrench to change my bench grinder wheel. The nut wasn't tight at all. I then proceeded to drop the wrench on the concrete floor. Picked it up and the socket portion was cracked from end to end on two sides.
They were discontinued soon after. I ended up exchanging for a ratcheting flex combo though.

It happens, sockets break. Just warranty it. It lasted 9 years, and now you can have a new one for free*!

Wouldn't cost the dealer anything, Snap-on will reimburse the dealer upon return of the damaged socket. My dealer's a bit slack on warranty, i think he just wants me to buy another new tool everytime i break one, which is very rare.

I've had that happen 3 or 4 times
Doing a nice easy job; socket cracks or the wobble shears. See hundred hours of hard service and break on the easy ones !!

I have broken only a couple of Snap On sockets in the years I have been buying Snap On tools, which is since 1976. Even when abusing them, like a chrome socket on a 1/2 " drive Impact gun, they held up well.

If you read it again it states (the way I re read it) I have British standard wrench sizes that are made by snap on, given to me, but I only have (a broke) snap on socket.

I'm pretty sure the day I bought it was the last time I stepped on a SnapOn truck. I think that guy is retired now.

S(tuff)hit happens man. No big deal (if you have redundant tools). If they won't warranty it (see no reason why they wouldn't) no big loss...unless you force yourself to buy from a truck for the replacement. Sometimes you can get cornwell impact pretty cheap on ebay but the warranty might be void.

Was it cr-v? Maybe try to get a cr-mo replacement if you can (regardless of brand) or one built a bit thicker if it's cr-v.

My guess is that when a socket fails like that without the broach being offcenter the blank it was made from was bad. Instead of metal all of the way through it had a piece of slag inside!

BA, (a weird one in that the higher the number the smaller the screw/bolt, so 0BA is larger than 7BA, for example), & BSW. Good old imperial stuff.

The problem ZRX61, is that you didn't have two or more of those sockets. If you did, Murphy's Law would ensure that you never broke one. It's clearly your fault it broke.

i doubt he cared much about the retail price of the socket. those things have a huge mark up. id bet they didnt have a dollar in manufacturing it.

He just heckled me for a minute on how it broke. Funny thing I didnt break it, was taking care of it for a friend. But I had never heard of a 90 socket besides some of those huge ones out here. This socket was maybe a 7/8 1/2 drive but very deep ridges for points on the socket.
