do any of you collect tools just to collect them? What I mean is just keep buying tools you don't need or won't probably ever use. The reason I ask is I have been buying tools here and there for absolutely no reason for a long time. My wife and mother have asked me why. The reason I tell them is because I want to have something to pass on to my son. I will say I am mostly a craftsman person. Raised on them as long as I can remember.

My father actually buys my brother and I some type of tool set for Christmas every year since I an remember. He also has hoards of stuff that he buys himself and his father bought and passed on to him. I figure between what I have and my father passes on to me my son would never want for a tool except maybe specialty tools.

So do I sound like a nut for buying tools just to have something to pass on or do others do that as well? I figure I will be a working man forever and won't have a ton of money to leave him and I don't own any business so tools is the next best thing that mean something to me. My wife buys stuff to pass on to our girls as well, but she don't admit it. I realize I sound corny, but what do you think.

My name is Brett, and I have a problem.

But really, most of my purchases are purpose made. There are people here that buy old tools just as a collectors item, so don't feel bad.

I think I have around 6 or 7 SAE sets of wrenches and 3 sets of metric wrenches, but only 2 hands. There are countless screwdrivers in my arsenal, but I have another set picked out. I'm not even mentioning the rest of the arsenal. Yeah, I probably have a problem.

My International Harvester tools are not counted in the above count. The IH tools are my collection-in-progress and are not used.

Now that you mention it, screwdrivers are my biggest thing I don't have. I bet there isn''t 5 screw drivers in this house. Probably why I can't ever find one. I think tomorrow I may go buy some. I saw some at Sears that was called evolv or something I'll see if I can find some information on.

I will say thanks for mentioning them, my wife would like to say something else, but trying to keep it family friendly. lol

i make a living using tools, so i buy them.

for the most part i dont need tools to work with, i buy odds and ends for garage tools, for many years nearly all my tools were at work, and i just had bare minimum basics at home.
over the past 5 years or so, ive been adding on to my home set,
i find it kind of strange now that my work tools are in my service truck parked in the driveway. :headscrat

anyway.......
i do more things at home now for a couple of 4x4 friends, lot more fabrication, most of my purchases are building/fab related.

i dont have any kids of my own, maybe my stepson will get some use out of my stuff when i'm gone.

You are welcome cowchaser. :spit: I believe that the evolv screwdrivers are Sears entry-level tools for people who really don't use tools too often. Williams makes great screwdrivers. Not too expensive either for a high quality tool.

I don't think I have or would buy a tool that i have no use for or would never use but I do have a few tools that will have very limited use. I , like the OP am in the process of building a really nice set in a nice box to pass on to my son (if he wants them) in 18 or 20 years when he sets out on his own. I'll use them in the meantime and will have enough left after he takes his to do what I need to do. I do, however seem to have more 3/8 inch ratchets than I will ever need..........

Yes i have a problem as well. i buy some tools for no need especially if it is a good price. i have wrenches hanging on the wall that don't get used. some old coach wrenches in the box that are good to look at but probably will never need them. i have more speed handles than i can use. You can never have enough screw drivers. i bought a bunch of model T wrenches at a flea market, they are all the same size but the guy gave me a good deal on them. so they cam home with me. we ran in to some money problems last year, my wife said we might have to sell some of your tools and i told her she will go before the tools. so i guess you can call that a problem. i have no sons but two girls and the oldest loves coming out here to help with stuff. so i hope she will want them when i can no longer use them.

I've gotten to the point where if a friend passes a few bucks my way for helping fix their car I usually buy a specialty tool that will make future jobs go smoother. Flex metric socket set & steering wheel puller being the most recent "new"additions.
But I also can't pass up a $3.00 U.S. made husky 1/2" ratchet even though I just counted 7 -1/2" drive ratchets in the toolbox

yeah, I have a thing for old snap on, craftsman, and plomb/proto.
if the opportunity is there, and it's reasonably priced, I'll grab it.

I cant really get into 'collecting' tools
I have tried by collecting some of the old wood planes but really dont care about having them and will be looking to sell.

I do buy some tools that I dont really use or have not used yet but when I find something that I think I can use I will get it if its a deal

To be honest with you I have started selling off all my woodworking stuff. I don't have much left. Already got rid of all the router tables and dust collection stuff. I just could never get into wanting to build stuff on a consistent basis. I am thinking of getting rid of the rest of it just to have some extra money for some automotive tools if I run across something I want. Been looking at torque wreches, but not sure what I should go with. It will most likely be Craftsman, but not sure if I should go all out on the digital or just get an old school manual. I honestly don't work on much so I don't think I can justify the digital. I am trying to learn though. Just don't know much about working on cars. Ole pops just wanted to do it and get over with or yell the whole time and I finally just walked off. Been looking for I guess a "mentor" in the Tulsa, OK area or north of there. Not much luck though.

I'm one of the people that buys a "collector's edition" or "limited edition" tool, throws away all the memorabilia and puts the tool in my toolbox for actual use.

Of course I do have more of some things than I need, and my fair share of tools I've only needed once and will likely not need again.

I buy a fair number of older tools to collect. I try to look for things that are cool or unusual. I'll use them once in a while if they're called for. I tend to overbuy at auctions and garage sales when prices are low and flip a few things to help pay for the ones I'll keep. It's sometimes more work than it's really worth getting tools cleaned up and sold, but it's also nice to take a tool that's pretty much ready for the scrap pile and put it back into circulation.

It's been going on for millennia, I'm sure the caveman had a favorite rock or stick that just fit his hands better than all the others, yet was reluctant to use it for fear of losing it or breaking it.And yet he probably still carried them around with him.

I can't help myself. I have way more sets of wrenches, sockets, ratchets, etc., etc., and so on. I hate to see well made US made tools languishing in a "no name" bin in a pawn shop, or flea market.
I have been buying older US made brands such as, Indestro, Wizard, Sparta, P&C, Pennens, Bonney, Snap on, Mac, Matco, etc., etc..
I don't need, or use double open end wrenches much, but can't turn down an American made wrench for $1 or less. Same with SAE combo wrenches. I have way more of those than I need. I just can't stop myself.
I just had a new grandson two weeks ago. I am hoping to turn him into a "Gearhead" and pass much of the stuff to him. If not I have made provisions for my friends to sell stuff for my wife and take what they want for their troubles.

I have a far more than adaquate tool inventory, tools from multiple trades. These are the everyday users.
I have a modest collection of tools I don't use. Most have sentimental value, they were my Dads or a relatives, or a purchase by me of a like tool (make/era) or a missing piece to help complete a set.
My Mom has a "Antiqueing" addiction and she drug my Dad along with her for years. I think he began to like it, and found new purpose finding old and antique tools for me to mount up on my office walls.
I buy as many tools nowdays to collect as I do to use. I like tools, they make me happy.
My wife understands, when I'm happy ...

My kids are grown, I think they'll keep my tools when I'm gone.
