I have some Lift questions

I am trying to see how i can someday sneak a 2 post lift into my garage.
I am about to rewire the garage and do some reframing internally messing with the roof or attic line. As it stands I only have like 8-8'6" in height to the peak of the roof perhaps another 4 feet. My only option would be to reframe the entire roof and id rather not go down that road due to cost and town issues.

What kind of power is typically needed to run a lift?

The only area I see where I can get one in with my low height is dead center where the peak of the roof is at its highest. I was wondering if anyone had any sites or info for the specs req'd for a lift?

Also next question I read on here alot about all these different concrete floor strength. The garage was poured back in the mid 80's I havent a clue on how strong it is. How would I determine this?

I reworked the roof in my last place, about the same dimensions. I just gutted and resupported rafters with steel beam at peak.
About the same as a 220v welder
I had to put a skylight on one side or hoist hit roof . Specs vary.
Drill a hole to measure

What doors in the garage? If there are two doors and the lift is in the center, make sure you can still drive the vehicle between the posts.

there is one big door it measures 16 feet wide with 6'-6" on the right side of that door that will create a nice work bench area when the time comes.

The garage is 24' wide and 21' deep.

The door opening is offset on the front of the structure. So the lift along with where the peak of the roof line is would end up being to the right side of that door opening. And hopefully to the left of the lift i can still sneak in another car.

I just thought perhaps someone had a bunch of info with all the lift inquries on here. Wouldnt be a bad thing to make a sticky in one of the forums if there was.

These are all basic questions that have been beaten to dead on this forum. Google and the search engine are your friends. Not trying to come off as insensitive or arrogant.

there are a lot of different lift manufactures. try goggling car lift/hoist, you can find all the spec you need from the web sites.

most 2 post lifts will require 11'6 to 12'2 for Clearance. you could also look into scissor lifts and platform lifts which do not require as much clearance.

with that width a two poster will encroach into the second bay and i don't think that you have enough height for a lift as-is. you will need 6" of concrete to support the lift. you most likely will have to cut out the floor and add new "pads". do it right. this is not a "rube goldberg" type project. :pimpflash

actually if u look at the lift manufacturer sites, a lot only require a 4" slab.


also, typical wiring for a two post would be a 20 amp 220v circuit.

You would need around 10' of ceiling height to get any reasonable rise height on your lifted vehicle. A few manufacturers make low height two post lifts to fit at that dimension. Most lifts are around 12' in clear height.

The electrical required for a standard lift is 208/230 volt, single phase, 2 H.P., 14.7 amps. A 20 amp circuit breaker is sufficient.

Test drill your slab in a few places to check the thickness and follow the manufacturer's minimum attachment recommendations for the lift you choose.

thanks guys. As stated above and i noticed it today while out there. I will end up losing one bay to park a car once a lift in in there kinda ***** not lookin like a lift is very practical for this structure.

I appreciate the help guys I will look on the web and see what i can come up with but its not looking very promising unless I turn my oversized 2 car into a huge 1 car with barely fitting a lift in there.

Im so itchy to get out there and start the project this weekend Im going to install a new exterior door and close off some of the exsisting windows then off to wiring

Why not find a mid-rise lift... better than nothing...

I agree on the 4" of concrete being sufficient. I have friends who have their lifts on old concrete of unknown quality but none have had any problems. Mine sits on 4" of 3500lb psi and has been perfect for 14 years.

A 20 amp 220V breaker will be fine. My old Weaver draws 15 amps @ 220V.
