Hi,

looking for a little info on I joist Flak Jacket for my garage build.
https://www.weyerhaeuser.com/woodproducts/engineered-lumber/tji-joists/flak-jacket-fire-protection/

Has anyone used them?
What was the cost difference between the flak and regular I joist?

As an alternative and I know it would not be as good a factory applied and meet any building codes do you think it would be worth my wild to spray my I joist with an after market fire retardant paint or an addative?.

Its late in the game as my drawings are 99%. But i was never a big fan of I joist but need them for the long span of the garage.

thanks
steve

What is a Flak Jacket?

It's in the link - it's a coating that's applied to TJI truss joints:

TJI® joist with Flak Jacket® protection combines the industry’s leading I-joist brand with a proprietary, factory-applied coating that enhances the joist’s fire resistance and enables them to meet one- and two-family fire protection code requirements.
Flak Jacket product availability varies by market. Please contact your Trus Joist Territory Manager for availability.

The coating would be helpful if the I-joists are left exposed; is that what you are planning to do? Otherwise, hang some sheetrock on the bottom.
As to costs, ask at your local lumber yard/HomeDepot.

Doesn't appear they add any protection to the lower member which is where it would count the most. I would definitely spend that money on drywall... size everything for dual layers of 5/8 if fire is such a concern, and add blocking to limit flame spread in the joist bays.

From an insider....you may want to hold off....Weyerhaeuser is looking into that product and complaints about odors....they’ve asked dealers to halt shipments until further notice....this was just pushed out 7-6 or 7-8....
