I'm going to be starting some remodeling in our new home; cabinets, shelves, bathroom tile, kitchen backsplash, that kind of thing. What is a good accurate laser level without breaking the bank? I've been reading about 3 plane, self leveling etc. Price seems to be all over the map from $200-$700. What do ya'll recommend?

I got a bosch 3 plane. It’s served me well. It’s a green laser, but they are all somewhat hard to pick up during a blazing afternoon so I usually lay out the evening before for the next day. Makes things easier.

whatever you get, get a case as it’s not something you want banging around.

I have a Bosch 100G cross line laser. It works well. It is maybe two fiddy. It has done everything I have needed so far. I have had to do a few evening shoots to set up for a job. I have shot 150’ at night, though the line does get a fair bit larger at that distance.

We have dozens as a GC, I like the 12 volt dewalt model DW0825LG it works as a plumb bob, rt angel in addition to hor & ver planes. Came with enhancement glasses that help see the beam better, you can also use with a detector. I have had good luck on site with the dewalt lazers they seem to ho;d up well plus the 12 volt batteries interchange with their 12v tools.

YouTube is a great place to do research. Be advised a lot of those guys get free stuff to say things, but you can see what the tool does regardless.

Highly recommend a 3 plane minimum, 4 is a nice bonus.

3 planes really lets you do some quick layout work, whereas a crosshair is pretty limiting, and dots are just kinda dumb unless you have a specific task.

My work provided Huepars, they are pretty good at a very good price. Careful, they have lots of different models out there. Ours had both the battery pack and the ability to put in standard AA batteries.

Ive heard very good things about the Dewalt line up, and if you are going big check out Hilti, PLS, and Johnson

Not planning on going big. It's hard to justify $700+ on a tool I'll use for a month then put away. Especially if a $200 tool will get the job done. Yeah, looking at all the offerings from Huepars is dizzying.

Huepar is moving quick, they have a completely new lineup then when I looked in Nov!

This is the closest thing to what we have, has both Li-ion batt + AA option. Also, if you want to use any laser outside plan on buying the detector.

Do you already have an accurate set of levels? Torpedo, 2', 4', 6', etc?
If not, I would invest in that first and hold off on the laser.

I have some decent levels (Sola, Empire, Stabila) but not longer than 48".

I find my 72" indispensable. I wouldn't hang a door without it (yes, I know they make 78" levels for this purpose, but the 72" fits in a number of places that a 78" wouldn't, so I'm really glad I went this way).

I haven't sprung for a 6 footer yet as the 4 footer has worked well enough, but I really should get one.

For lasers, I have a Johnson red cross line that has done me well. Feels like a toy, but it works and I haven't even needed to change the batteries in the few years I have had it.

I need to get a green 3 plane at some point though

I would have a hard time spending 150 bucks on an off brand laser. They may be great, I haven't done any research on them. But for a laser I want something I can trust right away. Not saying a 600 dollar laser can't go bad but I have a lot more faith in something that is made more for the professionals. I bought a bosch 3 plane about 6 years ago and it's served me very well. I use it ALL the time. Have done big commercial jobs with it to small everyday tasks. I can layout all sorts of things very quickly and accurately. I bought the receiver for it also so I can do things like fence and deck layout outside during the day. Buy once, cry once, you will find more uses for it all the time once you learn to use it to it's full potential.

I help a guy out in the summer doing concrete. He had a nice rotating laser for grading but never used a 3 plane before. I brought mine to a few jobs for laying out some tricky stuff. He was so impressed he went out and bought a M12 3 plane and receiver. We use it all the time now. It's one of those tools that pays for itself very quickly. I consider it kind of like a diagnostic tool for auto repair. I have a ton of diagnostic tools that I don't use often but when I do use them I want them to give me an accurate answer right away.

I got one for a job in the basement and will never go without again. I picked this knock off up for $27 a few years back, It does well for general carpentry, makes for easy work. Happy I took the plunge, a worker on a job explained how he leased his from a supply house, and did not worry as they upgraded his on regular basis. His looked like a large tape measure.
