chadster,

Have you thought about a serpa security holster on a paddle mount for the times you are in the truck? You can then do like several here at our place and have a BUG (Back Up Gun) for a secondary in a concealment holster that allows the shirt to be "tucked" in and the paddle mount that can be removed without too much trouble when stepping off of the truck but is still secure to someone grabbing it. Their are several styles of secure gun safes that can be mounted on the truck for those times you are away but that still allow quick access if needed.

The serpa style is easy to learn how to draw the weapon but is a level 2 retension holster to prevent unwanted people from getting it. The type that I am talking about are styles similar to this one:

Blackhawk Serpa Holster

For concealed carry I like to use something similar to Milt Sparks Executives Companion or (if you like your shirt tucked in) their Versa Max 2 holster with Kydex clips like this one:

Versa Max 2

Use the Serpa on a cross draw forward of the hip and the concealed just behind the strong side hip. You can also conceal a holster with a loose fitting, lightweight shirt that you put on when leaving the truck if you prefer to use a single firearm.

What is funny about this is my Snap-on guy and I were talking today about concealed carry (he carries concealed also) and he didn't have a problem with me being on the truck armed. I would hate to see the look of the idiot that tried to rob him with both of us on the truck though...

I welcome customers that have gone thru the legal requirements to carry. I wish all of my customers had the ability to carry. Due to legal and immigration status that is not possible.

Where do you guys carry the gun on your person? I would think a shoulder harness wouldn't jive too well with a pull-over shirt.......

Me? Strong side (right) kidney carry at the 5 o'clock position. Inside the waistband Milt Sparks holster with a Custom Colt lightweight enhanced officer's model 45 ACP. BUG gun is a Seecamp .380 in a pocket holster in the right front. Extra mags (2) for the 45 on left side just in front of the hip as well as a Ken Onion Leek in the back pocket. Sure Fire Executive Defender on left side just behind the hip.

Remember that you really aren't paranoid if they really are out to get you...

Yes. The fastest reload is another pistol. **** happens, pistols can break or jam and you can't ask for a timeout to fix your gun. I have carried concealed for over 30 years and hope and pray that I never have to pull a weapon again. If that need arises however, I plan on being the one going home at the end of the day.

I carry life insurance but don't plan on using it anytime soon. The same goes for health, car and homeowner insurance, first aid kits at home and in each car that I own. Everyone has some sort of "insurance" that they keep. My family and my personal safety is covered by the "insurance" that I carry.

Merk,

Ask some of the officers in your area if they carry a backup gun. If they are honest about it, you will find that a large percentage of them do. I shoot with a bunch of them and the ones that tend to take their firearms in a serious vein also tend to carry another pistol or revolver for that "just in case". You can be disarmed, have a pistol jam or become disabled or something as simple as running out of ammo for it. Having another weapon close at hand is better than begging for your life.

You also need to remember that I live in a free state as opposed to the Peoples Republic's of Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Kalifornia... Any Georgia citizen that can legally own a firearm is allowed to have one loaded, anywhere in their vehicle, for their protection. If someone is breaking into your home and you are there, you can assume they are out to do bodily harm to you.

Down here you don't have to ask the criminal if they have a gun and if they really are going to use it. As long as they are advancing on myself or a family member, one of us will not be alive the next day. Sounds harsh but I have never been one to pussyfoot around an issue. I'm not "politically correct" and don't care if I offend someone with my attitudes about firearms. I quit worrying about what other people thought about my viewpoints 20 or 30 years ago.

Merk,

The top one is the Versa Max 2, the bottom one is one of their Summer Special styles. My favorite of theirs is the Executive's companion. It has a little more squared up profile and allows the pistol to sit deeper.

My Snap-On dealer lost a Fluke. She was informed who did it by other employees of that stop, though. The police searched the premises, and found lots of goodies. She got the meter back, and he got free bracelets.

Put the cameras up. I highly doubt any honest customer would care. Of course, if anybody was caught stealing from Ann where I work, I'm pretty sure everybody else in the truck would haul them out and "explain" why it's a bad idea.

rodm1,

Do you have the R9 or the R380? I like my R9s but only in certain "social situations" in other words, when I can't carry anything larger (weddings, social functions, etc.)

Merk,

Trust me, that is a right hand holster that is shown. Milt Sparks can make a left hand one for you but if you draw with one, you will understand. They have a quota now and only accept orders for one or two days at the start of the month. That should tell you about the quality of their work. I have been using their holsters, mag carriers and belt since the mid 80's and have never had a problem with them.

Ok ... I guess I'm thinking of some dudes I've seen on TV that have the gun in back of their pants without a holster and I guess they DO drag the muzzle across their body line, because they got the handle pointed in the other direction. :dunno:

Just like you reach back and get your wallet, palm of the hand toward the body, **** of the gun to the back, sights to the front, The pistol is pulled up and forward, muzzle clearing the right side and brought forward.

Edit: Remember that this is an INSIDE the pants holster. You are looking at the side away from the body.

I'm brand new to the forum and I've been lurking around for a bit, but this thread is too interesting not to add my $0.02. BTW I hope everything works out.

A shoplifter is not a robber. I agree with that 100%. I bring up carrying a weapon as a physcological deterrent only...

I started getting worried until I read that (and not because I steal tools off trucks)...

IMO the camera would be more of a deterrent than displaying your "strap" in plain view for the world to see. I think a thief would find it highly unlikely that he/she would be shot for stealing a socket, and be more concerned with getting fired. I do agree that having a gun in plain view would be the best deterrent from being robbed.

Now that brings me to this question.. I figured at some point and time some unfortunate dealer has been the victim of a robbery or an attempt. If you don't mind me asking, what happened when you were robbed? And what would you have done hind-sight?

....and it is pretty much common knowledge that I am armed. If Texas allowed open carry I would.

I can see the use of a gun as a deterrent or self-defense for getting jacked on your tool route, but I'm wondering how it would go down in Texas courts were you to shoot a guy as he flees with a socket or adapter?

Vinko,

Texas is the ONLY state in the union where you can shoot to kill in defense of your property. If you see a thief stealing the hubcaps off of your truck down by the barn and you are 100 yards away, you can use your trusty dear rifle to "stop" them.

I don't think 99.9999 percent of the people out there WOULD do that but it is legal. The problem for a thief is wondering if the guy you are stealing from is that .0001% that will shoot.

Weed out the crusty customers, you can usually tell the guys that will steal. I for one don't 'finger" things up on a dealers truck unless I really intend to buy. Good luck......................some thieves are stupid, maybe he will try to warranty it LOL, then you can really get in the guy's face.

I paw through everything whether I want to buy it or not :) My SO driver has some boxes of stuff that have been on the truck since the 70's and those boxes are way in the back. Sometimes you find a gem.

Thanks for the info. As someone began to mention above, in other states, if you shoot someone you are going to jail. Probably for a long time, no matter what the circumstances. In CA you can open carry (I like reading through the opencarry.org forums on occasion), and I've been told by a neighbor who is a cop that in almost all cases in California, that as a civilian, your life's over if a civilian shoots someone, whether you've have good cause or not. My guess is that besides armed "home invasion," most prosecutors and probably even jurys aren't going to look favorable on it.

In reality you can't get away with shooting anyone, unless, they are in your home, and threatening your life, etc....otherwise the honest shooter goes to the slammer. I have seen it happen. The tool truck in a lot of states has the same rules as a retail store,
In Texas, an automobile that you own or are in control of, is considered an extension of your home. Therefore all Texas Castle Laws apply.

Chad, in Richardson there is a place that sells camera systems that include a hard drive. I'll see if I can find their # on Monday & get it to you. Frys would be another place to check.

when I was able to ride witht he sheriffs dept through the explorers program each officer carried a bug and had two or 3 more in the car. they always showed me one incase someone was beating their head in on a traffic stop. They told me to kill anyone that was going to do the same to them. They said I would not get in trouble if anything ever happened. Luckily that day never came. I rode for about 1200 hours when I was 18-19. Mostly on weekends from 9pm-9am. very exciting. crown vics float at 132mph when you hit railroad tracks.

i'm against shooting thief in the face but i'm all for CUTTING THE FAWKING HAND OFF, i don't mind he/she lives on my tax dollar for the rest of its life.

seriously, SO has in the business for a million years, does the coorporate teach dealers theft provention, help setup devices in the truck? i know it's been happening since day one, thieves don't discriminate anybody, the company has gotta be knowing some tricks.

Cops* are the LAST people you should take advice from about what is legal & what isn't & what it likely to happen if you shoot some lowlife dead while "in fear of your life".

*Especially the morons we have in LA....

Chad that *****.

I'm sorry to hear it happened. I can't understand why somebody would steal like this. As if it wouldn't be discovered quickly.

When I was in my early twenties, I used to drive out to my Snap-on dealers house every Monday night. Sometimes I would have to wait for him to show up. Nothing was ever locked up at his house. That always surprised me until I asked him about it. He said it was easier to buy a new padlock, cut it with bolt cutters and throw it on the ground next to the shop door, than it was trying to deal with getting the door/shop repaired. He went on to tell me that everything was insured and all he had to do was make a few calls and it was taken care of. I guess that worked for him. Me? I'd construct Fort Knox.

Sorry about the theft, Chad. Stealing tools is low.

I'm not anti-gun, but unless you are a cop, in gangland, it seems overkill to me. I have a good friend, up the road, he is always armed like Rambo, even to go down the street and get a sandwich. He always looks around, and thinks any moment, he may need to open fire. :headscrat It got a little annoying, and I told him so. He cut it down to a 9mm, semi-auto with one new magazine, just to shut me up LOL..........I still think he has plenty, he always brings one of his guns to the door, even if he knows who is there. :headscrat You never know right! as he says..........
