Picked up a couple bits today. Dont know what this is but Im sure I can make soemthing out of it. Im thinking clean up the round top and make a metal shaping anvil or cut the top off and make a grinder stand. Or some kind of 90 degree fixture for the mill.

Any other ideas or do you know what it is?

The bottom isnt completely flat, looks like it might have mounted to a curved surface.

Feel free to post your own junkyard finds here for repurposing ideas

i try very hard to limit the amount of junk i accumulate. if i can't figure a use in the foreseeable future, i leave it where i find it. sorry to be a downer, interesting find tho.

Yeah, have to be selective unless you have a giant space to fill.

I went to one of those "guy had collected stuff all his life then had to get rid of it all and move out" kinda sales. Great opportunity to get stuff cheap but a sad situation when it happens.

drill a hole attach soft wood thinking balsa to the insde drill second hole by hanldle make a squre "jaw with thin strip of wood and maybe a strip of rubber just my thoughts

Been thinking about a new purpose for the old DeWalt R.A.S. Ideas welcome.
Made a RC airplane hanger out of an Ikeas tie/belt rack.
Its awesome making stuff out of things other people toss. "Junk"

not to thread jack but nonhog hows that dewalt? i saw it at an estate sale and was tempted to get it but wasnt sure about it... anyone know what its worth?

also i go to school for industrial design and we are constantly making stuff for projects so i LOVE hoarding anything that i think i can use in the future ex. i have all the springs from my old trampoline that we threw away.. or just the plexi from a chandelier that we threw away... but one day, one day, ill find a use for it! and it doesnt hurt that i have some space to store them =)

not hijacking OP asked for us to post our junk. No idea on worth.
Got mine at a garage sale for 25 they were asking 50.
I've already gotten rid of parts of it.

I'm also wondering about using it for a bead roller frame. Removing the front plate and adding a wheel. Might work?
On other threads have mentioned using the gear parts for an english wheel.

I've got plenty of junk I may be posting more soon.:thumbup:

I second that. I would sell it first before I tore into it. Those things are nice and If I found one I would snap it up if I could afford it. I also redo old machines like that. I saw one I think the same or similar model that was restored. They spared no expense and it showed. It was a work of art. You could probably buy a grinder and have some left over for what you could get for that. I find broken stuff all the time and either fix or reuse it as something else. Kiwikev over at the hamb is the one of the best I have seen. But your saw looks to be in too good of shape to do that.

I went to that site and it looked really slow also I saw no classifieds.
I love the old solid machines and would love to see someone use it for parts.
I just wonder if the value is worth the effort being a basket case.
Its not together like the picture anymore.
Any Seattle area guy want to trade some other junk I'd consider it.
Sucker is way too heavy to ship.

the classifieds section is listed under BOYD - (bring out your dead). and you have to be a registered member to view them.

the dewalt saws are nice and have a definite following. visually they are interesting and very well built. my thought would be to register for the site, then run a search on the classifieds for dewalt radial arm saws. based on the prices, you should have a better idea how to proceed.

in my experience, shipping/freight is often not practical for complete tools. as a result, people often pay much more far parts than might be expected. in some cases, i've sold switches and lights for more than i paid for the entire tool. your saw has many unique parts to it. if i were anywhere close, i'd already have made an offer.

on youtube is a nice belt sander made from a r.a. saw

Hey nonhog,
I dont think I'd would actually try it but I remember seeing someone somewhere mounting a bench grinder upside down in place of the saw. Wouldnt be that great a setup and not really safe. stupid idea from me :)

I remember when I was in about 3rd grade one of my favourite things was going to library and I would always read the same book "How to make stuff from Junk" or "Something from Nothing" I think it was called, cant remember.

I blame this obsession on that :)

Wish I could find a copy now.

I am in the process of turning one of those into an English Wheel. I picked it up at the curb and seriously looked into restoring it, but the motor was burned out. It was going to cost in excess of $500 to rebuild the motor so it just wasn't worth it especially since I am not a serious woodworker. I had seen where builder of EW's used the mechanism from a radial arm saw as an adjuster, so I looked at the sturdy construction of the DeWalt and decided it was worth trying to use the whole saw. I just need to source the "wheels" to have it operative.
Unfortunately, I have no pics of it and the conversion has stalled due to an upcoming move but I will get back at it as soon as I can.

Here's two resources for books: www.abe.com and www.alibris.com

Someone's got it.

Years ago I bought a book called Moore's Complete Mechanic and Universal Assistant. It's a 1900's handyman's guide. Thought I'd never see another, but found lots on those sites for less money and in better condition.

Pulled a SST out of the dumpster at work and got to use it bending linkage
for a V8 Volvo project I'm doing.
No idea what it was originally intended for?
